Help Determining Tool to Remove Crankshaft Nut

I'm not awesome with mechanics, but a friend in the know told me that I need to get this nut off the crankshaft to expose the kotter pin (or woodruff key) so we can find out if it's been sheared off. I took a picture of it and placed it above.

Can anyone tell me what kind of tool will take this nut off? An impact socket would be best, says the friend. What should I be looking for in terms of size/shape/etc to make sure I get the correct tool?

We tried a screwdriver to knock it loose and the metal is pretty soft and it got a good gouge.

Another safe way is to tap it using a drift, similar to what you did with the screwdriver.

I used a Strap wrench, that's just a good how to.

Try putting the nut back on a few threads, then whilst prying gently, smack the nut (NOT THE FLYWHEEL!!!) with a large hammer.

Pipe wrench works well. Best to have the engine bolted down to something solid (workbench), and have a way to hold the flywheel from turning - a large strap wrench, or something between the bench and a fin. Be careful not to break off a flywheel fin, though.

Just unscrew your sparkplug and stick a few inches of clean rope down into the hole to stop the engine from turning over while you loosen and tighten with channel lock pliers.

The only thing I'll add to the rope trick (and this is just me) is to NOT use synthetic (plastic of some sort) or a synthetic blend rope.
You don't want anything plastic left in the cylinder to get hot and melt and stick to anything.More than likely it won't happen, but it doesn't hurt to play it safe.

also with twostrokes be careful not to get any rope down the transfers. It gets stuck realy good and then you gota take the engine apart lol

get a friend or screw drive ( pry bar to hold the fins so the flywheel dosent move, take a screwdriver and where you see the a notch put it there and hit it with a hammer, it spins off counter clockwise, i put a cap full of CLR on mine to get it off

That's excellent advice, guys! I'll try it all systematically until I can get the thing off.

You will break fins this way.

The proper tool is a C spanner

But using a hammer or chain wrench will work fine

I found a pic where channel locks are being used to remove a flywheel. Gives you some idea....

A C Spanner! That's totally what I've been looking for! I love the idea of a rope in the teeth of a wrench too. Could be the cheapest way. Thanks!

i use rope in the bore, and put a wrench on one of the over hangs off that recoil clutch and hit it with a hammer

u will ruin your tools
get/ make a drift bluey

a peice of metal bar that u can hit with a hammer like an extra large punch
u get ally or steel ones depending if the job allows damage to the part

i just lock the flywheel in place with a rope and then take a hammer and tap it a bit on the side untill it comes loose. i do the same with tighting and it has always worked out fine for me
