easy fix.

use the old rope (free..) or buy a good quality one.

recoiling the rope is simple just take the pull starter off and i bet you could figure it out

You just pull off the shroud and wind up the middle about 3-4 turns. Put a screw driver in-between so it won't unwind. Just watch the little hole on the part that rotates to get it into position with where the rope goes in.

Slip the rope through both holes and tie your knot. Unwind it slowly. If the rope has slack you need to take it off and wind it up more. If the rope isn't tight after about 2-3 inches of pulling the rope you want to rotate the spring some more to take up the slack.

It's not that bad but it does take a little while and it is something you want to do right.

Ok I fixed that and another problem just came up - the engine is idling high. So I back the idle screw out slowly until the screw just came out. The engine kept on firing. What's up with this? Can the throttle plate be in wrong? The throttle linkage is pushing it closed, and its runnning faster than idle.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. You may try tightening the bolts/nuts that hold the air filter assembly on.

You could cut a new one out of some thick paper, like on the back of notepads. You may want to use two pieces in case your paper is a little thin.

could be a problem with the governor setting,

is the carb butterfly completely closing?

try running the engine and with your hand, move the governor linkage VERY slightly forwards. it should slow down, this means its your governor linkage that needs adjusting.

I did remove the throttle arm but put it back on there. I know I put it on right. tomorrow I will further inspect this. I can pull the linkage all the way forward and the engine still won't stop . It does sound like a vac leak to me.

If the linkage is at idle (itll actually run w/o an idle screw...), the engine will idle and itll idle pretty high, too. Probably enough to make the clutch lock up so like 2200 rpm. As soon as you pull the lever back just a bit, it makes a deep sound and dies off.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. I assume if you push the butterfly closed by hand it still won't die?

Correct. There is a metal gasket that I put on wrong the first time and ignored it and then tightened the air filter on really tight and it bent the gasket slightly. Can I hammer it straight again?

No reason you can't try. I've heard of people just making new gaskets out of cereal box cardboard but I'm not sure where it was used. (needs to be gas and slightly heat resistant being on the intake)

Cardstock may work too.
