Ride problem

I own a 92' lexus sc400 and lately its the car shakes while going at normal highway speeds and it has this hummming noise too.

It gets better when I inflate the tires to 32-34psi but they do deflate so new tires are in the works but the humming is what worries me. It kinda sounds like a wheel bearing but I'm not sure it only has 117k miles on it?

Replace the tires and have them balanced. The shaking sounds like unbalanced tires, which could have ruined a wheel bearing.

new tires are like $350 and I can probably mount and balance them at work if i ask my boss. so ill just leave the car parked in the driveway for now.

Sounds like you have it figured out, but I'll throw my two cents in anyway. I agree that your tires are probably the problem. If the tread isn't worn down yet you don't need to replace them, though. You can clean the rims to make sure there's no dirt caked on, and balance them at work if the boss will let you.

If the tread is used up, go ahead and replace the tires.

FYI, a bad wheel bearing will not come and go according to tire pressure. If the bearing is shot, it gets louder as you drive faster, and there's really nothing you can do to change the symptom. Based on what you said, you probably do not have a bad bearing.

Thanks bro and the tread is ok but when i first got the car you can tell it has been sitting there for a while and when I did a brake job on it two weeks ago I got the tires off and notice a bubble on the FR tire and a little bit of dry rot so regardless I'm buying new tires hopefully I can find some decent performance tires to suit my driving style... (I tend to play cat and mouse when I'm driving back from harrisburg... Its a v8 coupe, humor me )

But thanks for the wheel bearing lesson its been too long since I worked on a car... And you had a point, I inflated the tires up to factory spec and the noise went away.

I also find that some tyre treads seem to make a humming sound on certain road surfaces. We have both cement and tar roads here. I find that on the cement roads my tyres hum a lot more than on tar.
