I've actually got 2 of them.

They're both quite stuffed though, took me over a year of active hunting (posting wanted ads everywhere, asking farmers ect) to find them. Just gotta get off my arse and restore them now. I'm gona build one out of both, one has a very stuffed body whereas the other has a rusted out chassis. Of course it will be fairly substantially modified and will be an off road toy.

Are they very rare over there? American guys always talk about trying to bring them in from Canada but they never seem to actually do it.

Because it's the eve belonging to the new year. Everyone just drops the "eve" at the end so it's easier to say. Likewise, it's the new year's day. As in new year's first day.

That's my theory anyway.

They never do it, 'cause they CAN'T. I can't remember the last time I actually SAW one. Cold winters, snow, and road salt aren't kind to vehicles, especially Asian imports.

Introducing "The Yella Terra II" (named as such by the previous owner). Basically what parts of the body that weren't rusted away were held together with pop rivets and tek screws. The mechanicals were horrible. The only part of this car that didn't need any work was the back diff. I worked on it for a few months doing what I could but now I've stripped it down to a bare chassis, ready to be sand blasted, rust repaired and painted.

Then I bought this, one of the Suzuki forums have dubbed it "Squishy" because of its big rubber windscreen washer that you pump by hand. This was still registered so that makes it a lot easier. It's got a rusted out chassis but a pretty good body. It was used as a beach car all its life but thankfully they painted the body every few years to stop it from rusting. Basically I'l use everything from this on the chassis of Yella.

My plans are...

For now I'm just going to run 30/9.5 BFG KM2s with the springs from Squisy (which are all new standard height LWB Sierra/Samurai springs but they've lifted it over 4"! Just sitting on flat ground the front shocks are maxed out!). Obviously I'l fit longer shocks and so on.

Then as a "phase 2" build up, as funds and time allow.......

On the original chassis I'l repair the rust (which is extensive) and bring the spring/shackle hangers in 50mm each side (for better flex) and modify it to fit rear springs to the front (also for better flex and ride).

To stop me from typing to much, I'l do dot points from here on.

• Custom chromo front axles with Sierra/Samurai chromo CVs and Sierra/Samurai disc brake hubs.
• Standard rear diff (which for some reason is unbreakable) with Sierra/Samurai SJ50 brakes.
• Sierra/Samurai tranfer case with 6.5:1 reduction gears+some sort of custom made cradle to fit it in.
• Air lockers of some description. No one makes lockers for these but there are very complex ways to fit the ones from other models(660cc Jimnys in particular). I'm thinking of making my own axle housings so I can use a Sierra/Samurai airlocker/3rd member with the LJ axles ect.
• Some sort of over drive. As it is 100km/h is about 6000Rpm.
• I also (you're going to think I'm bonkers) want to make a tray setup that has a roof top tent, fridge, cooking facilities ect. I'd have it so I can easily unbolt it and stick a normal tray on of course.
• I want to run a tall skinny tyre as they look smaller (the laws are stupid here, we can legally increase the diameter of our tyres by a maximum of 15mm and the track width can only be increased by 20mm per side! :crazy: ) so I was thinking a 235/85r16 (about 32x9.5) or maybe a 33x10.5r15. Half tempted to go all out and go for 35s or something though.

Now for the fun bit. As you probably know, these mostly came with 2 stroke engines, that's what makes them so awesome. Mine are 4 strokes, a whopping 0.8l 4 cylinder that's about the size and weight of your average 4wds battery(you don't even need an engine crane to remove it). This simply doesn't have enough power (duh) and the 2 strokes were even more gutless (but IMO, they're the best sounding 4wd engine ever made, they don't sound like a dirt bike, more like a big *** outboard). So what I'm going to do is fit an outboard engine to it. That way I get the awesomeness of having a 2 stroke car whilst having good power (especially low down) and light weight. I've got a 50hp Mercury to play with but I'l go for something closer to 100hp when I do it properly.

Yeah they're always coming up with some dodgy way to try and licence one imported from Canada.

If never actually seen one on the road, everyone says they were really common 15-20 years ago but I'm not old enough to remember back then.

They were pretty much all used as beach hacks here (we have pretty much endless beaches and dunes and these go great on sand) so they all rusted away long ago. They're made with scary thin panels and had no rustproofing aside from paint.

The Merc outboard is just... freaky? Obviously, the biggest hurdle will be cooling. I suspect you are pretty well-prepared to deal with that.

I can't wait to have it done hay.

Cooling isn't so much of a worry for me, it has a thermostat and runs at "normal" temperatures. Of course I'l need some kind of external water pump and I'l have to do something about the silly exhaust manifold/water jacket but that part is relatively simple. It's the dizzy (ignition advance relies on the throttle position) fitting a flywheel to the crank and the engine mounting that worries me. This Merc was just a scrap metal find (aside from a dead starer solenoid, it appears to be fine though) so I can do experimental things to it that would other wise be a bit risky on something actually worth decent money. A think a Jet Ski engine would be a better choice in terms of fitment but they don't quite have the low down power I'm after.

It just so happens that a family friend has a 9.8hp Merc outboard that they want to give me, with instructions "fit it to a go kart".

I have a thread for this on another forum but it's a bit messed up, I'l PM you in a week or 2 when there's (hopefully) some good progress and the thread is in one piece. Don't expect most of the interesting stuff to happen for a while though(give it 6 months I guess), I just wana get out there and wheel it right now!
