7/8 centrifugal clutch

I think I will try to drill out a 3/4 clutch first and if that does not work, I'll just do the other method russ and toy story suggested. I am dying to take this out for a spin

Ah man, I thought when I read this post I was going to find the clutch I need. I bought an edger at a yard sale for $20 not to long ago that I figured I'd use the motor for a kart. When I pulled the pulleys off it had a 7/8" shaft where the last 1/2" steps down to 5/8". Now it just sits there, basically useless to me. It starts right up and runs good though. I can only find the same $100 clutch on eBay. I may try adding a sleeve and stepping up to a 1" bore clutch.

you could run a 10t sprocket on the engine down to a 3/4" jack shaft that also has a 10t sprocket. on the other sides run a 3/4 clutch to the axle.

Lotsa extra rotating mass, weight, friction. Workable, but not the best solution, IMHO.

There are 7/8 pulley clutches, which may work for you. In my case though, I already have a sprocket setup

i know this doesn't solve the problem with 1" clutches being so pricey...i didn't realize until i started looking.

WOW...I can make them up for 3 bux a piece...if my math is correct.
Only difference I can detect is that I use stainless steel, and NOT cold rolled garbage.
Proof that diy pays off!

How will that work? The drill bit will keep catching the keyway.

Karl-sorry if I sound like a complete noob about this, but what do you mean?

look at your clutch, theres a hole for a peice of keystock that gets pressed to the shaft with a set screw, karl says that the drill bit would get stuck on the keyway when drilling

I have not noticed one on mine, but I will take a look the next chance I get.

if there's a keyway, then one could use a bore or endmill with a slow feed. however, that does leave you with a shallow remainder of a keyway that needs to be deepened to accept the new key.

i don't exactly like paying extra for the convenience, but i do enjoy "bolt-on" solutions when available...

speaking of keyways, i'd been wondering about adding an adapter sleeve and the gap that would be left...smallenginewarehouse (on ebay) offers this kit w/ 3/16 - 1/4 adapter key, which looks pretty handy, but still it exceeds $20.
