Newbie Needing Help...3.5 Briggs and Stratton

I recently purchased a Manco go kart with a 3.5 Briggs and Stratton Model #91212 with the "air governor". The kart has one spring that appears to be stretched out to work and binds up. The motor runs but doesn't want to take gas when using the gas pedal...linkage is working...will rev up fine when moving the butterfly.

Does anyone have any pics of the spring/governor set up for the motor above?

Does the governor require one or two springs?

Where do the spring/springs attach as I see several holes that could be mounting points.



Should a spring be attached to the loop in the rod that runs from the butterfly to the plastic piece on the rotating pull start assembly?

Does the butterfly move when you press the gas pedal. Maybe ask someone to help you by pressing the gas pedal (engine switched off) and you have a look and see if the butterfly is moving freely. If not, it is more than likely a problem with the throttle cable getting stuck somewhere. If this is the case, check the cable to see where the problem might be

I can't really tell from the pics where your throttle attaches to the carb, but see if you pull on the cable if it actually does move the butterfly. It might be attached incorrectly.

Does your motor have one or two springs going to the governor linkage? Mine came with one spring that someone one "rigged" up to work, but got hung up and didn't work correctly.

Could you snap a few pics of how your spring/springs are connected to the governor and post/e-mail me?

I couldn't figure mine out either. I just drilled a hole in the butterfly and hooked the cable right to it. I know there's the whole goverened/ungoverend debate but on a 3.5, it rarely get out of load enough to be of concern.

As promised, here are some pics of my setup for you. I took the air filter off so that I could get a clear view of the carb.

If you look at the first pic, you will see the back of the engine where the throttle connects, and the metal linkages that go up towards the carb. At the throttle connection, you can see where I have my return sprinf. There are 2 rod linkages, but it is only the one that moves the butterfly at the top.

The second pic shows the black plastic pivot that the linkage is connected to, and you can see how it would then move the butterfly using another linkage.

Pic 3 and 4 are just some shots for reference. I hope this helps you a bit. Let me know if there is anything else you want to know

Hey there, I have the same carb and a similar problem. Is the governor supposed to have a spring to return the engine to idle? My throttle pulls fine but doesnt spring back when I let off it.
