So I know this is a forum site, but the main page and all the links and writing hasn't been updated for a very long time. Why doesn't the owner fix this and put in some links that work? It would be beneficial to people looking for some general help and it would help the site get some more traffic since it won't be outdated. Just my suggestion.

I dont know why that is but maybe cause they dont have the money.I havent looked into paid membership but some of the forums i deal with have banner adds that help off set the cost of updating costs.Btw who owns this site?

A guy named Robert. I believe he is a gear head himself, but he rarely posts. Toystory is kinda like the boss on the forum. He's cool but he can't make changes to the site itself I don't think. It shouldn't cost to update the site, just to keep ownership of it. I run 2 websites for my mom and they are new but are slowly...and I mean slowly gaining traffic because I try to update it a few times a month.

I think the first thing to do would be to put some things on the front page that try and help keep some topics off the forum that we see every other day... 'help with gearing, what else do I need, will x chain fit x sprocket' etc.

That wont change anything.

I'm not any boss by any stretch, believe me. Robert was kind and trusting enough to make me a "moderator", but that does not give me any site-altering powers. I can edit or delete anyone's threads or posts, move or merge threads, ban boneheads. That's about it.

As I understand it, Robert's been pretty busy lately, and I can certainly identify. All this summer, I've had to schedule trips to the bathroom three weeks in advance!:roflol:

Some updating may be in order, but I think for most of us the real strength in this site is the forum itself.

A "buggy/sandrail" thread should be added then you should add adwords, adbrite, etc, to the site to help bring in some money.

Sorry guys, but already well put by everyone -- I've been crazy busy! I've been so busy the dang server hard drive filled up last night and broke the site! Doh!

I have to update the main site. I know. It's ridiculous I just keep putting it off. I dont' like hearing about broken links, that I need to look at asap. And with that said, I'm going to eat lunch. ;)

Thanks everyone.

As a new person to the site I think its great but I did notice some outdated links but that didnt bother me.

What I was surprised to NOT find easily is a variety of plans that are complete enough to build stuff on the main page. The forums are chocked full of great stuff.

I'm sure there a liabity problem there but that what I noticed.

there is lots of good stuff as it is and I dont mind digging around to find it but lots of other people dont.

Part of the problem is that there really are no such things as "free plans". The R&D required to engineer a good and proper set of plans requires that the engineer gets paid for his efforts. This isn't crayon-on-Denny's-napkin stuff, it can be very intensive.

Since folks want to get paid for work (go figure), all that can generally be offered up free is basic ideas. So here we are.

What we can do is offer up as much guidance and support as we can, and for those looking to acquire an engineered set of plans- we ask that you aquire them legitimately. Don't "steal" plans, and don't pass out copies of a paid-for copy. Folks do deserve to get paid for their work.

there is lots of good stuff as it is and I dont mind digging around to find it but lots of other people dont.

At risk of sounding rude, this is a DIY-oriented site. If someone is not willing to put some effort into digging up some info, how much effort do you suppose they'd put into building a decent project?

The site definitely does need to be updated. However, I myself, Enjoy its simplicity. 99% of the websites you visit nowadays are extremely chocked full of useless information and cluttered with silly gadgets. (Take facebook for example, was pretty simple back in the day, now its a cluttered mess imo..)

I think the main page could be organized a bit better. But not over the top. Update some of the links, Maybe a few new features? For example I could write a pretty killer ratio calculator, something better than whats there anyway.

On a side note, Robert: If you're looking for a hand with some restructuring of the site, Any code or design work. Let me know. I'd love to help out as web design and programming are on the top of my favorite hobbies.

I defiantly love the forums themselves. I to love the simplicity and "old" design of the forums. The site is really good with just a few little flaws that could be easily fixed.

thanks guys! hellspawn -- please write up a calculator! That would be awesome!

honestly I'm always open to ideas. I've been so snowed under for what seems like a year it has SUCKED.

That said, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And, THAT said, we're moving to a new awesome server host tonight / tomorrow. Finally getting those updates back in gear!

Contact me direct, as always, @ robert@diygokarts.com
