briggs vs tecumseh

I have a yerf dog 3202 with a tecumseh 6hp power sport. I need it to have a bit more power for my girls. I found a 6.5 hp Briggs intek motor pretty cheap that is used. My tecumseh is smoking a bit. Do I re ring the tec or buy the briggs. The Briggs has more "go fast" parts available for it. Suggestions on hop up parts for the briggs? The briggs is off of a go kart that was wrecked bad enough to be totaled and is a low hour motor.

I'm a big Briggs fan so I'd say get the Briggs, and you're right there are tons of parts and performance parts readily available.

I have read many articles about the briggs flathead build ups. Does anyone know if there is anything like this for the OHV motors? Will bumping the compression on there help me out? I do not think i want to de-govern the motor as I do not want them able to let it rip with no restrictions. One thing to add, and sorry to the clone guys, but I want it to be as much made in the USA as possible. So all china options are out!!

Same here. My karts and mini bike are 100% made in U.S.A.
Clones are just an easy way out for most.
As soon as a Briggs or Tecumseh sneezes, the first reaction is to get a clone.
Sad...
The true American mechanic (I am one of them) has all but disappeared.
The new mantra seems to be "why fix it when I can replace it".

IMO, there are more aftermarket racing mods for a Briggs over a Tec. As for removing the gov., it will be limited by valve float, and as long as you have strong enough after market parts, you should be ok as long as it doesn't rip at WOT for 15+ or so seconds, but WOT could be in excess of 7000k RPM. A stock one should hit valve float around 5500 RPM or so. Even there, you could gain roughly 25% more RPM without floating the valves and risking any harm to the engine, as it sits in its stock condition.

The Briggs 206 Intek shares most all parts with the Animal from their racing program. The differences are in the head. The intek uses a D port shape where the Animal has a round port. The D port promotes torque which is good for what you need.

If you want to keep it close to stock to be reliable just get the following.

Stock type Animal cam and valve springs.
#36 Intek carb (search a racing kart site)
Very mild polishing
Long exhaust with a muffler
Governor delete or work the throttle linkage springs to turn about 4500rpm. This is easily done with a little testing and a tiny tach.

my first small engine teardown was with an 8hp briggs flatty. to be honest, taking apart a bunch of OHV briggs and clones id much rather stick to a flathead. WAY simpler. now ive torn down a VW flat four and straight 6 chevy. and im afraid to take apart a modern car engine because those were SO simple! :D

made in usa is a great thing, and an age helps.

its not just an American thing, its the same everywhere. New chinese stuff is just too cheap. A couple hours labour + a few new parts to repair an old engine = more money than buying a brand spanking new, piece of made in china crap

That is something I did not know you could do. Does anyone have a write up or something that explains how to adjust the governor springs to adjust the max RPM? I am wanting to get them a tiny tach, and this:

Like i said its all trial and error. Luckily the Intek has many holes in the governor arm and a couple of springs you can bend the tabs on. You do need the tiny tach though to test this. I say 4500rpm because i had another one that i turned 5000rpm on a regular basis with and it trashed the bore and made it smoke. Oil quality may have helped but if its not a cast iron sleeve/IC engine you will have to change the oil alot more frequently with this kind of rpms.

Some Chinnese stuff is ok, but engines (clones) are all garbage and wont last more than 6 to 12 months if you are lucky! Stick with americam or better yet jap (Honda ) engines or you will regret buying cheap chineese garbage.I have had a couple of chino engines and they are just plain garbage.

100% Agreed. Most people on here wouldn't believe how many old briggs and tecs I come across at the scrapyard here. 70% have compression and spark when tested. Just needed a simple carb cleaning. other 30 are usually cases of neglect.. (Rods thrown through the blocks, seized, or fried rings.)

Do you really need power or do you need hole-shot/top-speed? I'm thinking a gearing change might be in order (change axle sprocket, tire size, or both).

I do not need more speed. I have looked at a 8 or 9 tooth sprocket for the jack shaft, but have not taken the time to see if I have a 5/8" or 3/4" jack shaft. I am also looking at changing the TQ converter to the #3 position as well as changing the spring to a heavier one (yellow?). I just put new back tires on the kart this past spring that are the stock height so I would not like to go that route for gearing yet.

BTW the Intek engine I was going to buy fell through. He said it was iron bore and it was not. Still looking.
