If you're going to be spending the money on a new axle, you might as well, in the down time, rework the rear end to support it better so that the chances of this happening again are reduced.

Yeah, I'm going to have to re-work it to work with a different axle. I've already re-done the rear end once (Adding more support, making engine mounting bolts easier to access, strengthening vibration prone areas, ect) the day before.

Eh, **** happens. :roflol:

i think the buggy was designed to jump?

please bear with me and my s*** 2d paint pics

basially it looked like an indendent double a arm suspension with the joints welded solid

he had suport bearing right inside the rims up against the hub and it looked realy solid

i dont think u have rear suspension do u but suports going out would be a needed thing for u

Alright, I'm bringing this thread back to life because I FINALLY got a good paying job and I went ahead and ordered everything I needed from BMI karts.

Here's the shopping list:

http://www.bmikarts.com/item/1-Bearing-Kit-2-hole-400405-712
-
http://www.bmikarts.com/item/Chain---Purchase-by-the-Foot-4006-90
-
http://www.bmikarts.com/item/60T-Sprocket-with-Hub-23001100-6370
-
http://www.bmikarts.com/item/8-Brake-Rotor---Black-05706B-6557
-
http://www.bmikarts.com/item/Hub-with-3-1-8-Bolt-Pattern-400243-or-600253-6500

36" 1" solid steel axle + a few sticks of keystock - FREE. Thanks to my buddy John-John.

I'm going to end up buying new rims for the rear tires more than likely.

Hopefully shipping won't take to long and I can get this kart back in business!

And with the 60 tooth sprocket, It'll be running a final 6:1 drive ratio, giving us a lot more torque. The original 37 tooth sprocket just didn't cut it torque wise. We would have to go flintstone style to get it going sometimes.

Also. Check out this little toy I got for free from my landlord:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/sany0325.jpg/

I got it for free because he doesn't have the title to it... which got me thinking... Perhaps I could remove the 770cc 2 stroke beast, equip a water pump, a radiator and a cooling fan and slap it on a future project. The engine is in perfect condition and runs beautifully.

thoughts?

A jet ski motor has been tossed around before. The general idea was that the motor would be high RPM low torque since there's so little resistance on water. But it hasn't been tested, so...umm yea...wanna be our guinea pig?

Well, the high RPM/low torque problem could be solved by using jack shafts to mess with the final drive ratio, could it not?

If I can get a title for the Jet-ski, I'll keep it as a jet-ski. I've had it on the water a couple of times and **** it was a blast. It took me by surprise when I first opened it up... It shot up and over 50 MPH in no time flat. It is scary fast, and it's very light for a jet-ski. Hitting the slightest wave would make the craft catch air.

If I can't get a title for it and get proper registration, I will definitely look into using this engine for a go-kart. The engine is very small and compact for a 2 cylinder 770, therefore I would probably be able to build something relatively small and light in which torque wouldn't be as much of an issue.

I bet it would haul *** too... We'll cross that bridge when we get to it!

personally I would keep that machine as what it is and sell or trade for a running high-power bike and let the registration be their problem.

No title = Sell price goes waaaay down. At least that's how it is around here. If I could trade this thing off for a sportsbike I would in a heartbeat.

Well, just got the email from BMI Karts saying all my parts shipped! I've got tomorrow off and I'll spend that time looking for some new rear wheels. My parts should be here Friday afternoon!

Unfortunately I have to work Friday and all weekend but oh well! I'll get some updates going here Saturday at the latest.

How thick was that axle that you bent?

3/4".
It bent it enough to cause very violent vibration at speed and wobble like crazy. The pothole I hit was probably 5 inches deep.

It also basically destroyed the chain because it threw the drive sprocket off center as well, forcing the chain to stretch far enough to derail.

It's what I deserved for using a improvised axle trying to save money.

The drive sprocket and brake rotor are still good, so I'll probably end up giving those to someone or selling them since I ordered new stuff.

The axle parts have arrived!!! Pictures incoming

4 feet of 40# chain:

The axle, keystock, brake rotor, bearings+hangars and 60 tooth drive sprocket:

I hate that I have work in less than 2 hours. I probably won't get much of anything done until tomorrow.

Here's the shopping list again to show what I purchased and where:

-
http://www.bmikarts.com/item/Hub-with-3-1-8-Bolt-Pattern-400243-or-600253-6500

The total for all the parts listed + shipping was $99.27. I got the cheapest shipping I could, and it shipped the day after I ordered it. The parts arrived and were in my hands 3 days later. Not bad!!!

Got the axle tacked on...I'm going to pick up the go-kart sometime this week and take it to weld the bearing hangars on with a better welder. I also got some painting done.

It's a little dirty from the rain yesterday and from the grass getting cut.

Didn't you bend the axle once cause of how far out the wheels are from the bearings?

no, it bent because it was cut in half and extended using 2 pieces of angle iron and welded together, meaning it was pretty much hollow in the middle. On top of that, it was only a 3/4" chinese ATV axle. Not to mention the pot-hole I hit was 5-6 inches deep and I was going 20+ MPH. pretty sure it bent my rim too.

The new axle is 1" and solid all way through. I also won't be positioning the wheels all the way on the ends of the axle. They will be positioned to be just a tiny bit further apart than the front wheels.

Dimensions?

hey, what are the dimensions of your chassy? by friend and i have the same engine and we were going to make a go kart out of it and then we found yours!!! it would be great if you could give us a hand.

by the way, the engine is in pieces because a kid in our small engines class is using it for school. hopefully he won't stuff it up. it will probably be another month until we get the engine which will hopefully work
