I have a Kohler Command 12hp, is there any where that sells performance parts for these? Will some car parts work on them like certain pistons and connecting rods, valves, valve springs, and rocker arms? I saw somewhere that people who professionally race lawn mowers remove their engine governors and put performance parts in it so it can handle it.

Car parts would be too big. Performance parts exist, but are limited to a few types of engines.

Slightly off topic, but why does it seem that most of the larger hp gas engines from B&S, Tecumseh, Honda, et. al. only seem to be listed for sale as vertical shaft models? Any ideas? Granted, I haven't been looking very hard, it's just that when I see engines listed from some of the suppliers that have been posted here when they get over about 8 or so hp they only seem to list verticals.:toetap05:

Have a good look here-http://www.affordablegokarts.com/performance_basics.php,

There's several things you can do for little or no cost, and to any engine.
This website is pretty cool, even though it doesn't look like it has my engine it still has so many cool tutorials.

Actually I think from the 10HP and up range has many horizontal engines, actually B&S makes racing engines line with multiple models and I think they are all horizontal engines. When you look for engines like on NorthernTool I would look in the horizontal engine catagory

This is what I was looking for, this has a lot of cool stuff on it.

You generally cant just take parts from one engine and stick them in another. They're precision machined to fit with the specific engine model.

From my understanding aftermarket pistons are usually sold in sizes or atleast in the car world but I'm pretty sure its just the matter of finding the right size.

It depends on how much value you place on you time for the search; the small engine community doesn't have the aftermarket support that the automotive crowd does. Demand determines price. Hopefully, you have good luck on this. Keep us informed. :cheers2:
