I made a Truck bed mounted winch

I had some good luck in finding some used but non running
ATVs and a wrecked scooter with a running 150cc gy6 clone
motor, but had no one to help load them and I had to get
them quickly.

I got looking around the internet for a something to help,
I was already thinking about using a winch and trying to
figure out a way to mount it, and found this page

Mounting Electric Winch In/On Pick Up Bed

I only had a day to make this, and it took most of it,
I only had angle iron, no square tube, so I welded
the angle iron sticks together to make square tubes

I used 1 inch x 1 inch x 1/8th angle iron for most of it,
the end pieces were 3 inch x 3 inch x 3/16, for the
receiver hitch thing I used 1/4 plate and 1/4 angle iron.

I am using a 1500lb ATV winch with a mounting kit,
and have loaded two ATVs and one scooter up rams
with no problems, no bending metal, nothing, it works

The winch was $70 and the mounting hardware was $49,
I think $49 was way to much for the mounting hardware,
but I was in a hurry, its got 35 feet of cable, my truck bed
is 8 foot, and tailgate is about 2 foot, so that leaves 25 foot.

Its a Master Lock ATV Winch, I got it local at Walmart.

For what it's worth-

Winches are rated based on the capacity while there is one layer of cable wrapped around the drum. Capacity decreases, and the motor load increases, with subsequent layers of cable. If you are concerned about retaining the FULL capacity (1500lbs) of the winch, shorten the cable so that it's just a bit longer than you need for the job. This will reduce the number of wraps around the drum at any given time.

That's one way to skin the cat. Most people seem to mount them on the floor of the bed; claim it's stronger/ better angle coming up the ramps. That small of winch, I don't think it makes much difference. You could also use the mount for more tie down points; you certainly bolted it on well enough!!!! Did you use washers or some more angle under the bed rails to spread the load out a little more? PAH :smile:

This was the reason I mounted it up higher.

I used washers on both sides, I have used it about five
times, works pretty good, only problem I had, was once
the wire got tangled up, I think it was my fault, not enough
tension on the wire when rewinding it, but other than that
I like it.

Winch angles

Good pics. I've never used a winch; used a lot of different lifting equipment, tho. One thought that occurred to me about mounting it up high; you shouldn't have to worry about it drowning in a monsoon!!!

P.S. Where did you find the drawings for your example's? Did you draw them here, or import them? PAH

i put winch's in pretty much all my truck beds, my diesel pickup has a 12,000lb promark winch mounted infront of the gooseneck ball , works great for pullin stuff into the bed or onto my trailer , and gettin me and others out of the mud. my mudtruck had a 20,000 lb tulsa pto winch in the front of the bed , i wasn't scared to get stuck with that
