so im new here and was looking into building my own shifter kart. ive looked around and saw that most are 125cc 2 stroke engines, i found this cr 125 on craigslist but i was wondering others opinion on it and how use able it is

http://newhaven.craigslist.org/mcy/2396559394.html

what i wanted to do with it was take the engine out and put it on an existing chassis, i mean that would be ideal because i dont have a tube bender.
thanks, colin

He says it blew the piston? I would be very wary of the bike. You don't know what kind of damage the barrel could have received. The last thing you want to do is spend more money to fully rebuild it again.

thats true, but do my intentions of just slapping on a dirtbike engine to a chassis seem alright though? i mean how much work will it be to get all clutch and shifter lines place and if i need to the brakes and steering?

If you get an engine, you will have to make mounts and that'll be in. The clutch and shifter are often combined on a hand lever so that you squeeze for clutch and then move the arm shifting gears.

yeh new barrel will set you back alot of coin. Would be cheaper to buy another running engine

edit: i think the 125 shifter engine of choice is the rs125 honda gp engine. Guys do use mx engines to good effect tho and there are plenty of karts around which you could look at and copy their setup so it shouldn't be any harder than any other engine to put in a kart. Except the mx engines exhaust with be less than ideal. You will prob have to modify it to suit or buy a pipe made for karts

yah i mean if it was just a piston and crank that it needed then it wouldnt be too bad but seeing as it can be the cylinder walls that scratched is bad. and whats a good price for an rs 125 engine? like whats reasonable to offer?

EDIT:
nevermind, i checked all over craigslist in my area and checked ebay. found nothing for an rs125 so it looks like im gonna have to go with an mx engine

I think using a racekart chassis to install a CR125 engine is a very good Idea. With that much power and speed you'll want a very strong/well-designed chassis that will turn, stop and handle exceptionally well.

Some DIY fabricators could duplicate how well factory made racekarts work, but they'd have to have the knowledge of an engineer, plus years of practical experience before they could pull it off.

This site sells pretty much everything you'd need to convert a regular racekart over to a shifterkart: http://sharkshifter.com/zc/index.php

This thread has lots of awesome info about doing a shifter conversion to a typical/fairly-inexpensive used racekart chassis: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4742

That link I posted in post #7 will give you an idea how much a new CR125 engine costs, and hopefully help you decide if taking the gamble on repairing that craigslist bike engine would be worth your risk or not...

The Cr125 is a popular shifter kart choice. They are a great engine. I fully rebuilt one with many new parts last year. As the other guys said be carful about the blown piston. Pistons can be 100 bucks but if that plating on the cylinder is damaged you need to have it replated, or bored and have a steel sleeve put in and then bored. Or you need a new cylinder. Any choice would be expensive if the cylinder is bad.

If you go to get it, ask to pull the head and take a look inside. If they guy is at all legitimate, he'll let you do it. From the ad, he isn't a nincompoop who is afraid of working on an engine, so this is should be no big deal.

I'm not sure about Oz, but over here in the states the CR125 is by-far the most commonly used shifter racekart engine.
Here's one for sale: http://sharkshifter.com/zc/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=90_91&products_id=187

im not in aus, im in nz.

rs125 is a grandprix engine...abit flasher than an off the shelf mx engine. Wasn't suggesting you buy one haha. Unless you got lots o money

any 125 motoX engine will do the job. You should be able to pick something up for not much $$ -and it'll make about 4 million times more power than a lifan engine

if its only the piston that needs to be replaced on that bike then it shouldnt be that hard of a fix just to do that, but if not im gonna keep my eyes open for a better deal, maybe find just the engine on ebay or go with the lifan, thanks for all the help though, its really appreciated!!

what about using an 80/85cc mx engine?

they will be way cheaper than a 125 and they sound insane
