Hello to all,

I'm currently busy building a electric go kart. It an old broken Dino kart that I bought about 2 years ago.

I have been quiet busy and hardly had enough time to work on it, so now winter is here and I'm starting to get enough time to complete my dream. As I want to try to do my best and most of the part will be customize, the project will take a bit longer.

I have cut the frame and extended the wheelbase to 1.5m for use mainly on drag strip, we all knows short wheelbase is not safe enough for drag.

Here are some pic as you all like to see what my project look like.

I would like to know what is the biggest and widest tires size do you get on a racing kart?

ok then, sorry my tires didnt work for you. but i still think 6 inches is enough, and if not get a longer axle and put 2 of em on each side, kinda like some trucks have with the dual rear wheels. thatd be cool. :)

With the power you're going to be putting to the ground, I would definitely step up to the Hoosier or the M/T tires with aluminum wheels, as opposed to the Jegs house brand.

This should be a pretty neat project. The instant torque of the electric motor should make for some smokey launches.

OHAY :D I'm trying to do similar with my old go kart. Convert it to E. Got myself a tiny forklift motor though.

If I may ask, what modifications did you do? If anything, I'm most worried about that cast aluminum "flywheel" on mine that cools the armature. I'm afraid that it'll fly apart :\

Hi Oscar,
Post some pic of your motor and cart then I can tell you more what to do. I need so see the pic of the motor. Cause there are a plenty kinds of motors. You get series wound, sep-ex, permanent magnet, ac .....
What do you mean "fly wheel" do you mean the cooling fan on the motor?

Pretty much. Bought it rebuilt from an eBayer. (Did you get yours from eBay as well? I've seen similar ones to yours)

Permanent magnet, 24v rated motor (planning on running ~96v). Yoop, the "cooling fan" which I'm afraid of detonating. Lemme steal some eBay pictures.

Planning on using LiIon as well... LiCo to be exact. Seeing that you're a drag fantic, I imagining you're going A123/LiPo?

Bought mine from a friend of mine here in SA for $50. as is, no engine and a few broken part.

As you see i'm busy with the frame, I have extended the frame mainly for drag racing. Also got to modified the rear axle support to fit jr dragster 18x8x8 thank to newrider's idea.
The battery will be the last thing to order as I don't want thing to lay around. Still has a lots of parts to order and work to be done. Most of the parts will be imported from US and cells from China, also I'm doing everything out of my own pocket. Some part will be order from

Fun drag/track kart. Just because it's "fun" doesn't mean I'm not going all out :)

Nice motor by prestolite it a series wound motor. Only one problem with that motor and that is the female shaft. It make hard to fit a sproket in there. Unless you make a new shaft, but it will cost you more than you get another motor with the right shaft.

So in theory I could run AC power on it?!

I plan on running a jackshaft-like apparatus, with an electromagnetic clutch :)

No you can not run AC on DC motor, but you can get AC motor and then you'll need a AC controller and so on. AC are much more expensive than DC.

For drag DC is still the best option, as it has more torque than AC at the starting line.

My best choice for you will be to get another motor that has a shaft. You don't need a clutch on electric motor, but a controller.
