Some progress for the night..

Got the rear hubs on, need to calculate some kind of gear ratio and find a sprocket. Stole the steering column from a 74 Bombadier snowmobile.

Those rear tires are just placeholders until I can find some with more meat!

But it steers and rolls so smoothly, I actually surprised myself with getting most of the steering geometry correct on the first try. Usually I end up sitting there for an hour putting everything together and taking it back apart until it steers the way I want it to.

Cool build mate, I'l be keeping an eye on this one!

Nah, you'll see alot of the higher-end ATV's (ie a sportsman 500) have single front a-arms. But they are pretty beefy, which is something I still have yet to do is beef them up.

They have MacPherson Struts, much better than single A-arms, even then, they still handle like crap. No quad that I know of (minus Chinese ones, but some of those have some real scary **** for front suspension, others are very well designed) has single A-arms on the front.

I'd leave yours single A-arm, you need to sort out suspension geometries and bump steer before you bolt another arm on.

I'm building a quad too, doing it much slower than you though! I've got the engine from a Chinese quad (233cc twin cylinder, has reverse gear! :wai:) Even though the engine is chain drive I plan to make it shaft drive, so sick of dead chains and sprockets from all the mud. :mad2: Just designing it, collecting parts and making smaller bits for now.

If I was you, I'd stick a Briggs or something in it until you get a motorbike engine.

Thanks

Hayden

I've actually been really tempted to just make some temporary mounts for my 18hp Briggs and toss that in there.

But uh, I still need to break all of the pieces down and finish welding it all and clean it up.

Not much of an update tonight, I redid the steering a bit to make it a tad easier to turn, and it actually steered a bit more smoothly than before. I tried test fitting my briggs in the thing, and the way it is, I need to take my custom header off and possibly modify the air filter assembly. no big deal.

Few days since I've updated this, I've kinda been stuck wondering what I will do for a driveline as I don't feel like shelling out cash for a 40 series (assuming I could find one) and my 1" I.D. Clutch is a bit worn out.

So! I started sniffing around some of my old snowmobile carcasses and discovered one that actually had a chaincase that went to a 1" O.D. shaft. I'm still contemplating if I want to keep the chaincase and use that gearing, or just build my own jackshaft with the driven and call it good.

But plans for a driver/clutch... I will be machining a sled clutch to fit the 1" shaft and swapping the weights out for the correct engagement.

I may need some opinions on gearing with this sled T.C. I essentially want to get around 35-40mph out of this thing with decent acceleration. But I don't know of any differences that using the sled TC will have.

Update!

Got this yamaha clutch fitted to the briggs!

What you see in the pictures is a actually a yoke shaft with a 1" I.D. with keyway that I turned down.

Also bored out the inside of the clutch to remove the taper. Sleeve is a press-fit. Shouldn't slip, ever.

Haven't fiddled with the engagement rpm yet, but currently it engages at about 2500, which isn't terrible, but its within the torque range and I certainly wont be test riding it like that.

I also ended up tearing off portion of the rear tail-section because I wanted it a bit longer and less of an angle.

Todo: driven clutch and jackshaft, and cut keyways in axle, and lastly brakes.. which won't be tough as the driven has a built in disc, however chances are is I will get one for the axle instead and use hydraulic instead.

pics!

Change of plans!

I'll probably be keeping the briggs with the sled clutch around so I can tweak the weights and spring in it and use it for another project, however, theres an off chance I may sell it once I get it in complete working order.. So if you're interested in a 1" clutch that can handle over 10k rpm and 40hp+ let me know :p

Anyhow, the bike is essentially the same thing as my Honda CM400T, however this is a Model C, which comes with electric start (no kickstart at all) and a tachometer.

This motor is rated at 43hp @ 8500, may end up being overkill for this project.. But I like having more power than I know what to do with. :)

How it sits as of right now... I ended up using a good portion of the existing bike frame to make things easier, but I still expect it to need LOTS of bracing for this heavy and powerful of a motor.

Somebody come help me wire this **** thing o.o They made it so complicated.
