New Arachnid Builder

Started my Arachnid 2 weeks ago, but haven't had the time to start a builders log. So here it is...

Have the main frame, the sub-frame, and front suspension block block done. I have the A-arms 95% done, just waiting for some round tubing for the bushings.

Next steps are to finish the A-arms and attach the sub frame to the main. I have the shocks, spindles, hubs, bearings+hangers, steering wheel + shafts, rack & pinion, and pedals.

Putting a GX-390 clone on it, along with a TC40 and jackshaft.

i like the way the arachnid looks.. or at least the "Cabin" or "Cockpit" or "Coffin" part of it..

the piece in the first pic..

when i build mine, its gona be strongly based on that.. (with a hint of barrcuda/piranah) it will in fact pretty much be the whole kart.. (with a hint of barrcuda/piranah) ..the swing arm will be mounted UNDER the seat, and the front edge of the rear wheels will be in line with the back edge of the seat.. more or less..

instead of having that boxed section for the front A-arms to connect toat the front, the top arm will conntect to the bottom rail. all this will give it slightly more clearance as well as look more styling.. (In my mnd.. lol)

and a few other things.. an extra set of bars going over kinda thing etc etc..

i aim to have the whole thing about the size of a typical bath tub, with the top no higher than the bathroom sink.. hehe.. (I daydreamed alot of this while relaxing in the tub.. hehe)

anyways thanks for the pics i love all the picks i can get of this thing from all angles.. hehe

OK. So the plans call for 18x9.50x8 tires. I am thinking of going with 20" tires with 10" rims instead (I have a buddy who has a nice set cheap). I am pretty sure the 13hp can handle it. I plan on using a 10T gear on the jackshaft and 60T on the axle.

Anyone see any issue with this? This is my first kart build so I could be overlooking something obvious...

No, go for the tires. Between the 13hp and 40 series you will be fine, especially with that ratio. They will look great.

sounds to me like it should be fine. if not, sprockets are cheap enough you can re-gear it later.. lol

those are the same size holshots i have on my warrior.. haha

That should work fine. In fact, you almost need to go with the 10" rims. The king pin and spindle steering arm don't clear the 8" rim if you use cone spacers above and below the heim joints at the end of the a-arms. On my build, I had to spend some time with an angle grinder to make the king pin clear the rim, and I had to cut and re-weld the steering arms.

I saw that on your build thread! One of the reason I originally thought of going bigger. If not for the other Arachnid builds going on, I would have had a MUCH harder time. Thanks to all of you!

No problem. I just wish my build thread hadn't been mostly wiped out in the big December crash. I had a lot of time in that thread, and there was lots of great input on the build from many members of this site.

Keep it up. It's a tough build, but worth the while. I learned an awful lot building mine!

Working on the front suspension block this weekend. I decided not to buy the spindle brackets from BMI as I have read too many builders complain of the quality. I decided to make my own.

For the price of one pair of the brackets, I got some 2x2 angle. I drilled 5/8" holes along the same line and then cut out each one 1.25" wide. then trimmed them down to make the end to end width the length of my bushings.

Now I can assemble to pieces with 5/8" rod for alignment and weld them on the block. Saved myself some $$ and frustration for just 1.5 hours of work...
