Just picked up a used and abused Thunder Kart that needs some fixing up for my 10 year old girl. She saw them in Northern Tool over the holidays and wanted one so I told here we would find a fix-er-uper and I did. Its got a 5.5hp motor that starts and then dies and it has a flat rear tire. Other than that all the pats are there.

So how did I do? Good fix-er-uper?
Where are the best place to buy parts fro these things now that I see that Thunder Karts is out of business.

Thanks for your input!

Maybe it's got a dirty carb, wouldn't hurt to clean it up. Good luck!

thats exactly what i was thinking.. dirty carb... (mainly stuck float..) not letting enough fuel in...

pull her off, clean her good. (Strands of wire from automotive wire are my favorite, and a tiny fine flatblade screwdriver...) and everythign from carb cleaner to brake clean to CLR..lol depeding on the part...

good luck..

I bought 3 fixer uppers for my boys.. ones 6, the others are 1.5yrs, and 1mnth.. lol

cleaing cab and replacing vac and fuel lines were all the first needed.. and a kill switch.. then a few more tweaks.. gotta figure out how to govern/limit it for the boy. prlly weld in an adjustable bolt behind the pedal.. lol

best of luck, and im a fan of vids, would love to see it in action once its up and running... or if you have problems, and can post a vid, it desn wonders to help us understand the issues!!

:D

merry meet and welcome to the forum!!!

So far replaced the chain, rusted in to one piece.....only good for modern art I guess. Replaced drive wheel bearings, tire and tube. That was a GIANT PITA to get that tire on.....whats the trick??? Than wire wheeled the brake drum and sprockets. Replaced the throttle cable. Pulled carb and took apart and cleaned. Replaced air filter.

Took a bit to get it started bit its now running. Drove it today to find out I need to replace another front tube, tire flat.

Its working well except the mess of springs and linkage on the throttle, it has horrible response and if I disconnect it and just pull throttle on carb its fine. Do I need all that crap in there. When I was a kid there was a cable to the throttle and a spring to return it. This even has a pull back cable attached to the brake.

Thanks for any future input!

the springs and linkages are the governor. its good to keep the governor all in one piece, but if you take them off, you might want to upgrade the conncting rod because of the high rpms you would get.

I have Tecs on all my dingos..

When i went about fixing up the one that I have touched, and fixed and rode, i had to do pretty much the same things.. lol

but anyways it had a bunch of springs etc on the linkages.. but one of the springs broke when i a was trying to get the carb off..

in the end, all i do is use a paper clip, or one of those pins you open up an fold the ends out.. (God why cant i think of the name of those.. lmao)

COTTER PIN!!! (Can you belive i had to google castle nut to figure out the pins name again???)

anywas, i just use a bobby pin or cotter pin lol..

they tend to break ever so often, because they get tugged and pulled, sometimes beyond what they need.. lol just keep a few in your pocket..

if you can keep the springs etc intact, i would do so... less hassles.. lol
