you can shave down the shaft with a nice wide metal file. while its running just take your time and dont go too far. you may have to deepen the keyway with a dremel tool

I'm not hip to the official names for torque converters and CVTs, but isn't TAV short for Torque-A-Verter, which would be a specific product? The one I have is a Comet 30,

Yeah- TAV refers to a specific model line of Comet brand CVT's. Technically, all the "torque converters" we refer to are CVT's, being Continuously Variable Transmissions. In my mind, CVT is a more accurate description of them than Torque Converter, and Quicker to type than Torque Converter. Man members use TC to simplify. I stuck with CVT for the longest time, but newer members and those not familiar with the term had to have it explained. The term TAV, while specific, has kind of morphed into a general term to describe CVT's and TC's.

EDIT- Also, the other option to filing the shaft down, is to shim it up to 1", although 1" drive components tend to be more expensive.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It doesn't sound TOO crazy. I could make some holes in the mower deck to mount it firmly to a counter, start it up, and turn the shaft down. I could All it needs is 1/16" taken off all around I think. I'll have to check my clutch bore and see if it's 5/8 or 3/4.

What kind of boss? The shaft on my engine looks like a regular keyed shaft. I haven't taken the blade off yet. Are you saying that there is something on the shaft which can be removed to leave the shaft the correct size?

I'd like to see some photos of your project.

My engine has the classic Briggs starter with the square ratcheting shaft. That's not a problem, is it?

The boss just supports the blades, shaft is 7/8" with the boss off.

The thread on my engine is here. It's mostly OT stuff though, I will make a proper guide on how to do the conversion when I get another Briggs. With a real camera this time too!

Your pull starter shouldn't be a problem, IMO that's the strongest Briggs made on a vert engine.

Thanks

Hayden

OK, I thought that might be what you were talking about. I'll probably be able to get mine off with a gear puller and WD 40. I have a big, heavy duty gear puller.

That looks like pretty much the same engine I have on my lawn mower. Probably a bit newer, though.
