Here's the skinny: the web server (where all this information "lives") went kaput last night. Two hard drives toasted. There were some backups! However, they were from 11-30-2010...

:furious2:

So we're back up and running, but with a case of amnesia. (Think of it as waking up after drinking too much for the new year's eve?) :worried2:

I'm sorry!

We had a redundant backup set up, but it broke a couple of months ago and we were "really close" to getting it fixed when this went out. But we'll be doing nightly backups again in a week or two.

So, welcome back, and you'll have to re-register if you registered in December. Thanks.

Thanks Rob.

Shame about the hard drives, I hope they don't cost too much! Thanks for getting the site up and running again so quickly. :cheers2:

I'l post a guide on how to retrieve lost posts tomorrow, not the forum though, just to view. It's 3:10am here so I'm off to bed.

Thanks

Hayden

Doh!! Had to re-register. Now I lost all 4 of my posts...or was it 3? LOL I'm a mod on a duck hunting forum and know first hand that these things happen. Keep up the good work Robert!

I made that guide on how to find our lost posts, I guess it is tomorrow now anyway. :D (It's 4AM now, the sun is just starting to come up!)

The guide is here. I hope it helps!

Thanks

Hayden

Good job on getting it up and running, how much did it cost you to get it live again?

well i just lease the space, so it's up to the company that owns the boxes to get it fixed. i manage my share of the servers myself but don't have to deal with actual hardware.

it sucks particularly b/c the other server we were on went down a couple of months ago, so that's why the backups weren't happening nightly, b/c we were limping along on just one server until the new one is finished. Of course, that should be done next week... Murphy's law.

So, just wondering, how much does it cost to rent space one their servers? And that's pretty amazing that they got it running again so quickly.

Does this site come close to making money? I dont see any ads or means of making revenue?

Edit: And thanks for getting it back up quickly:thumbsup:

@Rustydog -- yes we went down again yesterday, it was related to the down time a few weeks ago. All those changes got zapped based on the data loss, so I had to put them back in to place. And before I could, the spammers came calling. What happens is you get a TON of hits all at once and it binds up everything. The computer just can't keep up. Got it solved again so hopefully all is good for a while.

re: ads - it does make enough to pay for the servers, but let's just say it's not a ton. There are ads on the "regular" parts of the site, but not in the forums. Since all of us in the forums are "regulars", (and I can't stand ads in forums) , I don't subject you to them!

The cost for the servers is quite expensive. I pay about $130 a month. You can run sites like this on cheap servers 10-20 bucks a month, but they often get slowed down. And (yes I know the irony) they don't do backups for you, give minimal support etc. Odds are on a cheap server I would've lost a year of posts b/c I'm so bad about backing up. (yes, I plan to change that! ;))

Wow! I think this forum needs a like button like Facebook
Rob

hmm that's a great idea. we've got a "thanks"... seems like a "like" would be easy... (i can hear the internet gods snickering at me every time I say something's easy...):roflol:

Thanks for leaving the adds out of the forum. In some other forums I am on they have ads and they are really annoying!

I hate the forums that split posts with ads. Although, I wouldn't object to border ads if the money was needed to keep this running.
