I am currently building a single seater go kart for my kids. I have a 6.5hp clone, a 16hp clone, and am considering getting a 1500cc gy6 clone for this build. The 16hp is set aside for a different project and I am not even considering this for my kids kart. This kart will be a cross between the Shredder 2 up front with independent front and single in the rear. My kids want reverse so the gy6 is a real attraction in that category. Friends go karts have gy6 clones and run fine and are fast for their kids. There are mods for both motors available everywhere. The 6.5hp already has mods done to it, billet rod, head porting, valve springs etc... It is fairly fast!!! I guess my main question is, How dependable are the gy6 motors? Reverse is nice and I can build the kart to fit either engine...not a problem there. I am very good at fabricating so no problem there either. Post your opinions on each. I don't want to do a flatty at this time...just a personal preference. As soon as I start building, will post pics.

Thanks, Joseph

gy6. it has a torque convertor, has more power stock, more adjustable tc, no rev limit cdi (extra). the few gy6's i've had, needed a cam chain and rings. as i wasn't the first owner, i can't say how long they lasted. but for the rings and cam chain to wear out at the same time is kinda questionable. some of the electronics are sub par( on all of the chinese stuff), but they are cheap enough to replace. there's a 4 valve head in addition to a big valve head. not so with the 6.5. big bore kits. the initial price of the gy6 should be comparable to the 6.5 with all the same accessories. if not cheaper.

Yep, should read 150cc clone!!! Thanks guys!! I went ahead and ordered a150cc gy6 from PCC, http://www.pccmotor.com/150cc-gy6-150-atv-gokart-engine-motor-builtin-1506150.html, should have it in my hands by next Thursday!! I figure if I don't like it, I have other choices. I do love the abundant performance hop ups available for it!!! I think I will enjoy it more than the kids!! Gonna start the build process tomorrow. New thread to come!!

And to add....if I like the engine, I will have a 6.5 HF clone with ARC rod, 18lb springs, air filter, rejetted, with eulsion tube, exhaust header, no governor for sale. The head was slightly ported and cleaned up by me!! I have 17 years experience with engine work, so it is reliable. And I will have a genuine Comet TAV 30 41 pitch 10 tooth for sale as well. Keep and eye on my posts in the near future if you might be interested!!!
