It can't be that bad, the tissue is still white. :roflol: No, that is good advice that I'm sure you'll take into consideration from here on.

Yessir- See the 4 slots milled into the press table? That's what they're for! Ahh, I can't say too much. I've been lazy, not wanting to set up one of my clamps for one lousy hole... And had that happen! I've managed to escape injury, but the moral of the story here is do things properly and you don't get hurt. You're lucky- it could have been worse. Now learn from it, okay, mate?

Besides, if you're gonna get hurt- Shouldn't it be 'cuz you wiped out your kart breaking your current speed record or something, not "Jeez, I was drilling a hole"? Cheers

get some of them locking vise grip clamps, they are about as easy to setup as possible, great for welding too. no cutting oil?????? i use 3 in 1 household oil, not real cutting oil, but it works fine.

i got a picture of one to stare at...... lol, i use cutting oil with my hand held drill, just because it's not a press doesn't mean it can't destroy bits. in fact my hand held is quite good at that, snapped my 3/8" bit the other day :mad2:

EDIT: if i recall correctly the Ryobi drill presses come with a vise, or is it too small of a clamp or does the vise only comes with drill press 12"

It will act as a lube 'til it bursts into flames. You should really use cutting fluid because it is non-flammable.

Now THAT is probably the biggest piece of BS I've heard today. I've used many different fluids as cutting oil, from engine oil, chain oil, wd40, atf, all kinds of aerosol lube, and never once had something catch on fire. Smoke, yes, but you'll have some smoke with any lubricant.
Besides, you shouldn't be running your bits hot enough to catch anything on fire, if you are then they are being ruined. That is the whole point of a cutting fluid, to keep the tools cool. Otherwise you're dulling them at a severe rate.

i like gear oil. my friends grandpa invented this stuff called energy release. its mainly used ad an oil additive but they also have a formula that thickens it a bit for use as a cutting, drilling, and tapping lube. its great stuff. keeps your bits nice and cool.

i have never had my oil even smoke, i keep the rpm low and just watch my bits scoop out chunks of steel, my bits always come out nice and cool!

p.s. at least get some wood/metal bits. i use an irwin set, works good, only slightly dulled one bit when i first tried drilling through metal (couldn't hear for a few hours, had my drill at full speed, no cutting oil of any kind, i had read somewhere that drilling through metal required at least 3000rpm, now i go nice and slow.
