Geez! That'd take some MAD fabrication to do, but Harley BigTwins basically do it that way. The motor and tranny are separate- connected by a chain or toothed belt (customs). I used to have a Honda 90 motor that was shot, but the tranny/clutch was good. The idea crossed my mind to eliminate the rod/piston, hook a sprocket to the magneto side and then run that to a decent engine. Too complicated for my humble skill-level and garage, though.
