6.5 clone with 5 speed bike trans?

I have a 6.5 clone engine on a very plain kart frame. I came across this dirt bike with no motor for a GREAT price. Would it be as fun as i think to use this trans on my kart? I hope to upgrade to a shifter kart very soon, but i hope this will hold me over until i can get a better frame and motor. Any problems with this idea?

Problems? Yes. The transmission case and engine case are a unit, no? This presents a problem...

Am I not looking at the trans in the pic above? If nothing else, couldnt I cut the engine from the trans? With a big metal band saw?

Sure. then you gotta figure out how to seal it up again to keep the oil in there...

The trans and engine share oil? Is that correct. I figured I could cut the engine off and use the trans alone. Im pretty sure this has been done before.

The only way to use that would be a custom turned crank driven from the flywheel side or straight down with a chain. There is no easy way, the real easy way is to rebuild the engine.

Man, so even If i could get this for $30 i couldnt use it? It seems like such a shame, I thought I had struck gold. I imagined connecting my engine to this trans and blasting through gears. ****

I think it will work. I was going to do the same thing one day with a 80cc suzuki. You have to remove the rod and piston from the crank, weld on a sprocket to the flywheel and make a cap to cover the cyl. hole.

You dont know how the crank in a dirt bike is made do you? Its not meant to take torque that way. Its actually 3 pieces pressed together, you will twist it and eat the crank bearings(not to mention lack of balance). The ONLY way to make such a thing work is to turn a custom crankshaft and make a block off plate for the jug. Or possibly make a round plate the same thickness as the distance between the crank wheels, cut the pin and file flat, then find a way to square it all up(turn a jig) followed by welding the whole thing together. Power goes in where the flywheel was, you will need a lathe here to make an adapter with option 2. Be sure to fill with oil so the crank bearings get lubed(if 2 smoker).

Point being, this isn't something the average tinkerer can throw together in his garage, you need machine tools and skill.

Why not just rebuild the motor and throw that on your kart and have it ****loads better then that clone?

The guy said there is no head to the motor. Man, this seemed like such a great opportunity. This is a suzuki if that matters. Arent there SOME dirt bikes that have removable transmissions? It is hard to believe that this would be so hard. Now i gotta rethink everything.

Just buy the parts off ebay. The transmission can't be removed due to the fact that the transmission housing is the engine block. You might find a Chinese engine with a removable tranny but your still talking about money and machining to make the tranny work. Best bet for short fun is to Cut off the piston and rod and then weld a sprocket to the flywheel and run a chain from it to your engine. Doubt it would last long at all, BUT it would be a cheap method to have lots of fun for a day or so.....

Like kenny said, you cant just attack a sprocket to the flywheel side of the crank, it will kill the crank bearings in no time (and by the looks of it, they cant be in great shape anyways). You will need to turn a custom shaft...which will likely be a ***** if you dont know what your doing. I'm sure it is possible, but the work required would not be worth it...besides, in the end you still have an industrial engine...

No dirtbikes i know of have removable transmissions. Some quads do.

If you can get it for 30, i would. the engine is probably saveable for a few hundred. Looks like an rm80? if so that would make a pretty nice kart engine, or a fun beater bike.

Do you think that the crank can be welded to a 1 piece?

harly have seperate trannys but then u are forking out huge bucks
i hear u can convert mower tranys
sorry to repeat it but the best bet is to rebuild it it will be better than screwing around with connecting up the clone as the rmp range is wider and it is greatly cheaper
