I was wondering what would be a good sized ATV for a 15 year old. I am looking to hopefully get into racing, as a hobby, and to ride with friends on local trails.
I would be a new rider, having been bitten by the bug after riding a friend's, so keep that in mind. I would be looking to go with a Sport, since I rarely hear of Utility races(appart from mud bogging.) As for size, I am roughly 6ft and about 200lbs... so I think that I could handle most.
For that, would Mid or Full be best? Also, what would be the price that I could expect, to buy used(Craigslist.)

Thanks

Start off with a Yamaha blaster.....lots of parts available and pretty tame machine stock. They can be modified to run very quick....

Blasters are blasts to ride. Maybe that's how they got the name...

Although Yamaha is the best... Blasters suck. Definitely a good idea for a starter, and cheap, but when you decide to get serious, drop the Blaster, and go for a Raptor 660.

Oh, and ummmmm, just cuz you're 200 lbs. doesnt lean you can handle anything... a 700 will still quite easily buck you on your as s if you don't apply power correctly and are not in the right seat position.

A old semi auto 250 4 stroke will put you on your *** if you dont know what you are doing.

A 400-450 would be all he'd ever need. After seeing how some kids handle these things its scary to think anyone under 18 owns one but some people really do mature faster than others. I wouldn't have trusted myself with one before 21, heh.

I didnt mean the weight as a controlling aspect.... I know that most things will still buck me... since they put out several thousand pounds of torque. But, concensious would be Blaster. Good, since they seem to be on CL fairly common.

Would one be able to race a Blaster?

Also, do these things maintain their value.. so if I decide to sell it, I will atleast recover most of the value.

Can pre-owned ATVs be insured? I plan to insure it, so if something happens(theft, fire, collision) I dont end up losing a grand or so in a split second(merely a deductable).

If you're willing to actually learn to ride and control the vehicle, I would go with something like a Honda ATC 185/200s just to bomb around, or an ATC200x if you want the full suspension/sport capabilities. Three wheels are superior in a lot of riding conditions (just as long as you don't ride like an idiot) plus if you do roll it, an ATC is several hundred pounds less weight to try to get back off of yourself.

Yeah....Raptors are slow PIGS. Don't hate on blasters, they may be slower than most in stock form, but with a little porting, suspension work, pipe, they will walk a great deal of machines. There are guys running stock bore with Flotek porting just raping bigger machines.

YES KAMPFE, YOU CAN RACE BLASTERS. Also, as newrider said, a 200X is a great machine to start with also. If you feel ambitious a 250R will really put a smile on your face....

Now, a YFZ450 is faster than a craptor, and Look at this video....

+1
The response and power straight up sits you back in the seat the first time you get on one, it's an amazing feeling.
One thing I did find through riding my buddy's Tecate 3 (geared lower via smaller tires) is that lower gearing is a good way to get some experience with the 250cc liquid cooled 2 strokers, before you move up to full speed.

No need to get depressed about it, i was just voicing my opinion too. Cant just hate on blasters without any back round knowledge of what they are capable of!
