We've been listening to nothing but the Beatles around here for about a month. That's about all that my kids want to listen to.

Must be easy to be a musician nowadays. All you have to do is push buttons, thrash around like an idiot, and scream or mumble and the producer will auto tune you.

OK, I went back and listened to the things that were posted. Clutch was pretty cool. Not my favorite style, but they have some great ideas. Disturbed has a very skilled guitar player, but their songs sound just like a thousand other songs I've heard in the past 15 years. I'll have to put them in the "suck" category, although they would make good hired hands in the studio for somebody with some imagination needing to hire a competent band. Ditto for the Switchfoot song, only they sound like a different thousand songs. And while we're at it, somebody ought to tell NOFX that the crappy-singing-while-playing-your-guitar-like-a-drum thing was cool about 30 years ago.

The Brant Bork thing was pretty good. I like guys who can actually play, and create a hypnotic mood.

I'm not trying to be a cynical old fogey. (I'm only 41, not really an old fogey yet.) I really mean it when I say it's easy to get away with low-grade crap nowadays. People's expectations have really fallen. I used to play at the open-mike nights at the blues clubs several times a week when I lived in Kansas City, and it always amazed me that people didn't demand better music from the performers. They would sit there and applaud for the lousiest crap you could imagine. I'm not a great musician myself or anything, but I know it when I hear it.

I like the people on this forum, especially the teenagers. Just by building go karts and bikes you guys are defying the system, refusing to be turned into the stupid robots that the past several generations became.

Great musicians and writers are right up your alley. Just say no to mass produced crap.

I have a lot more respect for the guys who invented the different styles, rather than the legions of hacks and imitators.

Half of those songs are like 15 years old anyway. Those guys are older than you are.

Know how ya feel. I stoped listening to rancid when i saw a FBI warning label on the back of one of their CDs. I think its stupid when artists get so full of s&%t that all they care about is money, especially when they claim to be punk.

saxaphone and sometimes drums if our normal drummer can't play

Hey, cool! I play sax, too. I also play harmonica..... but there aren't enough musicians around here to have what you would call a "music scene". Ever since I moved to the boondocks 2 years ago I haven't played at all. I'll have to teach my kids to play, then we can have our own band.

Robbie, as a musician, I agree with you completely on the average talent requirement these days!

There's a documentary called Before The Music Dies, in which a bunch of respected musicians, producers, writers, etc, examine what happened to the music industry.

My favorite part is where they have a songwriter come up with a song in about a minute, then they hire a model to record it, and the studio wizards turn her into a "star". She's not really a star, but you can't tell the difference.

It's a great documentary. Check it out.
