A good chain should be taken care of. You'll need to periodically oil the roller chain for best life. To do this, remove the chain from the go kart or mini bike, and soak in a penetrating lubricant overnight. A simple spray of WD40 is not adequate. You need the lubricant to penetrate the roller chain. If you don't, the lube will be flung from the chain when used.
And when you do reinstall the chain and use it, make sure you're wearing a dirty shirt because you'll undoubtably get dirty.
