Default New Project Advice

Ok, playing around with our kart has given me the bug, so I'm in search of a project. If anyone has any experience with these karts, please share before I drive all over DFW. And I understand I could find some new horror when I see them in person. I also think I can get a better price than listed. With all of them I am looking at installing a Predator if needed. Preferences, but not deal breakers, are live axle and a TC.

Thunder Kart L-650 $200. Looks to be all there and in good shape, supposedly runs fine. Appears to have been stored indoors. I can tell it needs the following, seat cover, brake band, chain, and clutch. It is a live axle, or so the little sticker on the axle says so. Figure another $100 if nothing else is wrong, so $300 total cost. Might go to $350 if I go TC instead of CC.

Murray Explorer $100. Nothing seems to be missing. Jackshaft, disc brakes, and a TC. I'm assuming the engine is toast. It will need tires. Anything to really look for in a used TC and disc brakes? Looks like it sat outside for a while. Might be a complete no go since there seems like a lot of rust on one side of the frame, can't tell if it's just surface rust right now. Est $250 at minimum, so total about $350. I'm not very confident in that number since the TC and brake condition is unknown.

Manco Scorpion $250. Will need tires and a seat. Already has a Predator and TC, also has disc brakes. Says he drove it all last summer with no issues. Moving and has to get rid of it. Maybe $150 to get it going, total cost $400.

Yeah, I like the specs, however it's very crusty. Pretty concerned about the TC and brakes. With a no running engine, no way to test them.

I like the Scorpion but only because I have property and never drive on roads.

Yeah, I like it the best, but was really interested in a low to the ground kart rather than a buggy, so I'm torn between the 2 since it seems to be a very good deal. He said he got it to fire up 2nd pull last night, but needs "TLC". That could mean anything from worn out to a good carb cleaning. Tires don't look bad, but could be rotted, could be bent rims. No matter what, I'm just going to be chasing the kid up and down the street in her Manco or a little parking lot racing.

I like the Scorpion as well. Seems like it might give you more options down the road.

Starting to think it's not a Scorpion. The back looks different, the rails along the side are different. The owner isn't much help, pretty sure he has no idea.

Ok, it's not a Scorpion. Tomberlin Firefox 620. Never heard of them.

I’d go for the Thunder Kart, because I’m old and to me that’s what a go kart looks like.
No cage, no suspension, nothing fancy.
Yep.
That’s a go kart.
Ps- If you do get it, since it doesn’t have a cage, get rid of the belts.

Right now that's I'm headed. Not sure how that old flatty will run if it's been sitting up a while. Might have to budget a new motor.

Do you know if it's a Briggs or Tecumseh flattie?
And yes, jandj, I think the purest form of a go kart had no roll cage, no suspension, and no frills.
And either way, suspension karts will simply be more expensive to maintain due to simply having more moving parts.
P.S - The steering wheel on the Thunder Kart is the same as Carsandcameras' original one on the Black Widow!

OH WAIT!
That Thunder Kart is the SAME type of frame that the Black Widow was built off of!
Get it! PLEASE!
