will this motor work

I'm new to this whole cart thing and I want to build one for my son. I want to start him with an electric one first. Mainly to keep the noise down and not to make the neighbors mad cause he will learn to handle it in the yard first then once he proves himself we will move on to some trails. At that point I will build me one and either convert his to gas or just build him another. But my question is that I have a motor that came off my old 8000# winch that is 12 volts and is rated for 4.5 HP. Will this motor work or will it be a waste of time and I just need to get a different one?

The problem is the winch motor is not continuous duty, It will burn up if ran for extended time.

just get a gas engine. they are not loud unless it has a straight pipe. if your neighbors think its loud tell them to F***k off. i get people complaining about me riding karts i dont care they cant to anything. the biggest problem that happen was a cop pulled me over on the kart and said please dont ride past 8, thats it. plus if you dont want him to go fast, on most pedals you buy, there is a stopper. when you put on the pedal weld something on the frame so that you can put a bolt and nut so you can adjust when the stopper hits the bolt. but to do that you need that type of pedal

Not a very responsible attitude, IMO. If the whole world had that mindset, we'd have been extinct long ago. Google "courtesy." Let's not give our beloved hobby a bad name.

I rarely advise limiting kart speed by limiting throttle travel- burns up centrifugal clutches because they are continuously slipping. Use lower gearing/smaller tires to limit speed.

FWIW, I think the winch motor may have a chance. When USED as a winch, yes- short cycles, big load, big heat. If, on the other hand, that same electric motor is used under a much lighter load, it'll be happier. Gearing may be used to limit the load (kids, right?) and heat sinks can be added. It's all theory without specs, though. Why not experiment?

Thanks for the replies. I think I will see what happens when I use it cause it doesn't fit the winch I have now anyways. I don't really want to make my neighbors mad cause I still have to live by them. And the home owners association already hates my jeep in the driveway. Now it is time to do some research on this electric carts.
