:iagree: I really just want to emigrate to aus more and more by the day haha

Why? USA has all the good parts :lolgoku:

I am little worried about sheet being too thin though you can see in all the Aftermarket mounts they come out slightly wide at the bottom back on itself then to vertical. i presume this improves strength.

I think it has more to do with positioning. That dog leg shape would actually weaken the structure, it has a higher risk of collapsing on itself. If it were straight, it would be stronger, requiring thinner material...

I have some 4mm lying around. i may get the blowtorch out and try cut a small gvoove on the outside of the bend. head her up then bash away. see how it bends lol sound plausable?

No, not really, sounds like overkill to me; 2mm or 3mm should be plenty

And that's why u are on the big bucks !!

I should be but, I'm not :lolgoku:

That's a good idea
Shame I didn't see this this morning
Would have come in great use

Hindsight is 2020 my friend :lolgoku:

You have got to be kidding.....

Why? USA has all the good parts :lolgoku:

:huh::huh:

OK; Moderators; I would have started a new thread, but I haven't got a clue how to quote/ multi quote from this thread to start another. To all concerned, my apologies for the questioning/ desperately seeking answers rant below....

So, are you trying to say that you don't have seven steel/ tool steel/ aluminum vendors, three assorted plastic suppliers/vendors, and five tools/ tooling/ machine tool vendors with at least another 4~6 bearing/ belts/ power transmission sources within 45 min. drive from your house? I know that Grand Rapids is a SMALL city, in the Economically Hardest Hit State In The US: the only reason I've still got a job in heavy industry is A] I like the work; those that don't tend to weed themselves out; and B] I've been willing to retrain to do whatever type of new job has come my way.

The skilled labor market is approx. 1/5 the size it was when I entered the workforce ~25 years ago; we have maybe 1/8 of the # of vendors in all categories that we had back then....

That's why I just have to ask; just how :censored::censored:(insert a certain pair of :censored: words here) is the world in your neck of the woods that economies that supposedly have their :censored: together are complaining that I have it great; that you dream of having it as good as I have it? We've lost both our auto plants in the last 10 years; the overall region has maybe 1/3 of the independant auto suppliers left; a couple of European multinational's bought up all five of the big name appliance manufacturers for their names, then outsourced all the production to 3rd world countries (and then wound up re importing the jobs to "other" parts of the US when they spent 4~5 years scrapping over 75% of what the offshore factories attempted to produce..... Look up the saga of Frigidaire after "Electro-:censored:" (Electrolux) bought them. That's a whole 'nother Rant; it's just another thing that has me going ??? when you tell me how good I have it here...)

Like I said, I apologize for this Rant; it's just that I've been through five major recessions (MSM only claims two) in just the time I've been working in town; throw in another four while I was growing up on the family farm.....

Maybe one of the reason's we're still surviving here in the State of Michigan, is because every time someone tries to :censored: us, we've learned to cop a really big, bad attitude.... "What, that all you got????" We're not out of the woods yet; I also know that we're not done yet, not by a long shot....

Rant off.....

Easy Pat, I know times are extremely tough stateside right now & have been for some time. I was referring not to materials but to parts such as
-engines: you guys can pick up a 212cc Predator for $100, unheard of over here
-clutches: it was cheaper for me to import a clutch & chain from the US (including the shipping) than it was to buy a clutch locally
-torque converters: not many outlets sell them here & the price is usually well inflated.

Other small parts are simply unavailable; I had to make my axle bearing plates because I simply couldn't find them in Australia & buying a pair from somewhere like BMI would've cost more for postage than the parts are worth.

On a relevant note, it was announced last week that Ford Australia are halting all local production as of next year; Holden previously announced the same some time ago. A lot of our industry is going or has already gone offshore & the mining boom that's been keeping our economy afloat has plateaued so, it won't be long before our country is in as big a mess as yours.

When you explain it that way, things make sense. It's just that when I see/read posts from you all around the world where you all seem to be holding your own with a lot better luck than we have been, and yet you are claiming that I have it great(!?!); Sorry, I just had to say something....

And yet, as bad as it is, I wasn't lying about the # of potential sources I listed. Those companies (and, by extension, us grunts on the floor getting our hand dirty) are still here because we've had to get lean, mean, and sometimes a little vocal about how we refuse to go down without a fight.

I used to have a reference bookmark (on a old computer) of a study done by some organization in Germany; it would be 4~5 years old at least at this point. What was interesting, was that during President W.J.Clinton's administration, they had done a worldwide survey of which nations Manufacturing workforce was the most productive (my line of work). The US won.

The same group reran the survey 10 years later; what had changed? US non manufacturing workforce fared about as poorly as you might guess (let's not go there). The heavy industrial/ manufacturing sector was still on top, and WAS PULLING AWAY from the rest of the world. Not just the developed world; the whole world. (Amount produced/ per hour worked/ per worker).

One of the biggest reasons is automation; if some poor person in a foreign country is being starved to death on $.10 a day to let his supposed employer (slave master; may they burn in :censored:) undercut us on price, the only way we can compete is by taking all the slow, non productive steps out. Automation (CNC's, robots, CNC's running the robot to load/unload the part, and then check it as well) plus the fact that a lot of companies are beginning to learn that dealing with a shop down the road, that speaks the same language, can cut the turn around time for any changes from weeks to hours (meaning no vast sea of containers full of incorrect parts).

I know that things are tough all over; as long as the 1% with a piece of paper think that they have forgotten more about how to run the world that we (supposedly) will ever know, is not going to end well.........

Ha very true

Someone must know what is going on
But they are leaving everyone in the dark

And as far as those who run the joint
Don't know about over there but here the big boys think they own a booming economy
When infant it's all falling apart
As Fabroman said a huge part if our economy is the mining boom
And working in the bottom end of that we are the first to be hit
We have had large job cuts at work
And quite a few smaller mobs have shut up for good
In 2011 we were doing 72hr weeks to just get by
Now we are doing 38hr weeks and are walking around with our fingers up our ....
At least we are still being paid

And and don't be too worried yet
Queensland coal is picking up and I'm willing to bet once this stupid red head so and so gets kicked out in September things will hopefully pickup
And if it rains more we still have a strong ag sector

I've heard it's pretty bad in the US
Hope it picks up there too
What's the big issues there?
It's pretty clear what's wrong here
Is it just changing industries and shipping out manufacturing or is there more to it

Oh yea sorry for the off topic

Why countries are all going to pot

Hey guys.

I thought I would move the discussion that was being had in one of the other threads to this one.

Hopefully I do it right.

Well now we have our own thread

Two things to ponder from today
One moment there's talk of work picking back up and a turn around

Next they are saying they are going into survival mode in perpetration for a second GFC

Then we are back into all this work we gotta do
Apparently we have 10 CAT 793c truck frames coming in to be stripped
At just a casual few mil each
All being sent to Chile
Maybe that's where we should all move to

Going to Pot, hmm...Well two states so far! :lolgoku:

:funnypost::lolgoku::oops:

Congrats, soup!!! As soon as I saw the new title that LU had granted us, I just KNEW there was going to be a comment about certain seven pointed herbaceous plants that are the leading cash crop in a certain large coastal State in the southwestern US. And, wonders of wonders, it was posted by someone FROM that State!!!!

All that now begs the question; what do you do to generate supplemental income? It's been common knowledge for decades that Cali's biggest cash crop was also not legal (and it's still your home State's biggest cash crop!!!!)

And yes, I know that it's grown around here as well; we will start seeing it in the headlines in the next month or so. The State Police runs helicopter sweeps on a regular basis, but they only have a small budget for it. Where the big tips come from is when the State National Guard units start their summer training cycle. All that infrared night vision equipment can also tell a corn field from a different leafy plant.....:lolgoku:

Now, where was I??? First off; Landuse, thanks are due for your transfer. While the name may be taken as being a little "off color" in some markets, it does add a little "gallow's humor" where it wouldn't hurt to have it...

Fowler; i can sympathise with you on that one; personally, I think you'll have much better odds staying at home in Oz. Chile is by no means the most corrupt country in South America, but it still has a long way to go before it would be comparable in civil rights, and all those things we tend to take for granted in the more developed world. And if anyone is thinking I'm claiming the US is the best in the world, all across the board, think again. We still have all the problems (plus a whole bunch that are unique to us) that most any country in the world has. At least here, if some fruit loop is waving a gun around, threatening people, it's still legal for me to put one of my size 12 steel toes up his :censored: to show him the errors of his ways.

Here's a problem most countries don't have to worry about; they don't have large, for profit, Non Governmental Agencies trying to strike down all common sense rules for owning firearms. These people claim that you should "NOT BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST FOR THE OWNERSHIP OF GUNS, just because you have some small personal issues, like say MULTIPLE violent felonies; DOCUMENTED mental illness/ issues. They feel that we must "THROW AWAY" "OUTDATED/ ANTIQUATED PRINCIPLES and/or CUSTOMS" such as you do not carry a weapon into a house of worship, or a school, or a hospital. They want to overturn established legal precedent that say's that if my employer, (of a privately owned company) makes it an automatic firing/ termination of employment offence to carry a loaded weapon OF ANY SORT onto his private property; here in Michigan, a place of business that does not deal with the general public (I.E. retail), has the same legal standing as his or her personal home. The argument that "someone" needs to carry a weapon to defend themselves while in public don't apply when the general public isn't supposed to be there in the first place. Apparently, this really basic bit of logic is highly offensive to some people. I would have serious reservations about working for a company that allowed :censored: nut jobs to wander around with loaded firearms whenever they want.

And yes, there are safe and sane CC gun owners out there; of the seven that I personally know, six are adamant that mandatory background checks, and mandatory remedial retraining/ testing would put a serious bite on the tragic headlines we have several times a year around the US. Treat it like a drivers licence, they say. In many states, it's harder to get a drivers licence that it is to get a pistol permit, which is nuts, because it's a lot easier to kill someone with a handgun than it is with an automobile.

Sorry; this topic got really close to home today. The shop I'm working for ATM is in one of those multi suite commercial complexes. There was an incident at the vending company based in the unit two doors down today; no shots were fired, and no one was hurt. Still not entirely what was going on, but there was a knock down, drag out of some sort just before 8:00 this morning, with someone returning with a gun just after 9:00. The first we knew about it was when the cops showed up, guns drawn, sirens wailing. There was only four layers of drywall between our space and where the battle would have been... For the record, does anyone know where I can look up the armor ratings/ protective specs for 3/8" to 5/8" drywall? I might need to know this stuff, because most OSHA rated machine enclosures are rated for how well they keep the mess being generated inside the machine, not what caliber of fire they can withstand.....

Haha yes I couldn't resist the joke. I may live in that southwestern state but I don't do any of that s***. My profit is all legal (and tax free!) from recycling and jobs people may need help with.

Our gun laws over here are simple: NO ONE'S ALLOWED TO HAVE ONE!

Actually, that's not entirely true; if you own a property, you can have a rifle... You can have a permit to shoot but not to carry. With laws like that in place you'd think there'd be zero gun violence... NUP! Like the old saying goes, "If you want something bad enough, you'll find a way to get it...

Just a friendly PSA:

While none of the post so far in this thread have broken any forum rules, the nature of the subject tends to get people worked up, and they could come out with guns blazing (LOL, sorry).

I just want to remind everyone that this thread will be locked down very fast if that type of thing starts happening.

Carry on......

:surrender: Sorry Paul; you got me on that one; yesterday was just :censored::censored: all the way around; you have six businesses with between 3 and 8 employees each, in an industrial building with 8 suites (two bus. have a pair each). When the cops showed up to try and sort it out, well, lets just say that overall productivity on our block went swirling down the porcelain commode......

Several of the shops (mine included) take our breaks at fairly common times during the day; Lunchtime was beautiful out. so, of course a double handful of us were camped out on the low retaining wall at the back of the parking lot.

With yesterday being so fresh, the B.S. started about what would be the ultimate shop security system. Between the tool & die guys, machinist/machine builders (me), industrial electrical, and the Heat treatment company's sales engineer, we came up with multiple ways to prevent unauthorized entry. If anyone of us was stupid enough to Actually Build One, I know we would be looking at jail time. Our UPS driver just stood there shaking her head as we all signed for various packages (no one was in our respective shops anyways, and we can all do our S&R duties while eating lunch in the parking lot), she finished up a four year stint with the Marines a couple of years ago, and thinks our coolest ideas may violate a couple of treaties. Maybe the T&D guy's are crazy enough to try it, the rest of us thought that ADT was probably all we needed for preventive measures. Besides, if your security system consists of a fuel/air explosive device approaching the 1 Kiloton mark, it's really not much of a security system, so much as a total destruction deterrent system (Kind of like the old MAD theory, only with no logical thought as to the outcome)

Good news!! The weekend is here!!!!:wai::popcorn::cheers2:
