What are locking collars for?

They also can hold the axle from moving on the bearings. Just a way to make sure all stays put on the axle. And the axle stays put on the kart.

Sets screws serve the same purpose of locking collars. They push into the axle and hold it on by friction.

i believe you need to use the set screws however they do not take the place of locking collars in my opinion. I think that both need to be used to secure the items to the axle securely.

depending on the type of locking collar, it simply rely on a set screw to inhibit movement.

IMO, split locking collars are the best! (although they are expensive..., they do relive many future head aches)
-wayyyy more friction surface
-no need to disassemble everything to install or uninstall them
-no set screw to come out easily and get lost (sometimes holding a key in place.....)
-no more marks all over the shaft from tightening a set screw (marks sometimes make disassembly a pain (i know you could file a flat spot to prevent this))

splits are definately the best.

i have had my kart go around a hard turn on pavement and it slid, and the axle moved all the way over to the side and threw the chain of course. with just a set screw.

One little tip that I could add, take a 1/4" drill bit and drill a small way into the shaft so that the set screw has a place to rest. Keeps from tearing up the shaft and you can get the setscrew in farther.

I use locking collars as spacers on my center section to give me clearance without having loose parts, also used them on my driveshafts as seal surfaces for the bearing seals. umm. I use the ones with a key pocket to cap off anything on a long open shaft i dont want the key getting out of somehow (brakes, drive sprocket, etc) letseeeeeeee... oo I used them to keep my steering column from wiggling in and out (double u-joint added a slight wobble)


the bottom line is anything you dont want to move put a collar next to it if there isn't anything to keep it there. there are other ways but none are so easy. if I am using a set screw for something super important( like the two on each sideof my buggies drive shaft keeping the axles from slipping out I drill a hole and then up a bit a few sizes up to bevel the hole edge and put a grade 8 bolt in place of the set screw to to pin it.

Locking collars

I'm new to this internet stuff, so I can't provide photo's; there is another type of locking collar used on industrial pillow-block and flange bearings. I've seen several names used; the most common name is the cam lock collar.

It comes with the bearing as a loose separate piece. One face has an offset circle or oval step machined into in addition to the usual set screws. One side if the inner bearing flange is machined the same way. To use, you assemble bearing and collar on your shaft in question. Position the shaft where you need it. Slide the collar onto the bearing, lining up the two eccentrics. Rotate the collar on the bearing until it stops. There are several holes around the outside of the collar. This is for you to drive it a little farther, using a punch and hammer. Then tighten the set screws. It doesn't matter which way you turn it to engage and tighten the eccentric; I use righty-tighty, lefty-loosy for consistency if I have to take it apart.

This type of locking system does not have set screws in the inner bearing race- just the cam lock collar. This means it can clamp onto the shaft more consistently than set screws; the problem is you can over tighten it and potentially damage the lip on the bearing or the collar, It also can not cover for a shaft that isn't the right size (25mm shaft in a 1" bore). Used properly, they give you the benefits of both the cam and the set screws.
