I've seen videos on youtube of how people have made welders out of 3 car batteries wired in series, or with an alternator powered by a lawnmower engine. Does this really work? If so is it strong?

Welding with batteries is an emergency field repair at best. Yes, it can be done, but the battery(s) don't live long, the quality isn't anything to write home about, and technically can be dangerous. Your best bet is to do thigs properly.

Alternator welders are fine. Lots of industrial welders were nothing more than a big motor and a big generator. That is the best way to produce DC power.
