I would like to build a go kart for my daughter. But how do I figure out what size engine to use? Mainly for use in the yard with a few hills. I have lots of old riding mower parts I could repurpose. Thanks.

First off welcome to the forum!

Now to the go kart questions.

You say you have lots of old riding mower parts! It really depends on your abilities. You could build one from scratch, that gets pricey but is also rewarding. Most guys on here use the Harbor Freight predators, they run $100 and make 6.5hp which is enough depending on frame size and that kinda thing.

If you have a trans axle from a mower and an engine that's vertical shafted you basically have an entire drive-train right there! So, do you plan on building from scratch or buying a frame and restoring?

I do have a drive train from a Snapper 22hp. the engine has a BIG hole in it but I can get a different engine. A friend has an 18hp Briggs that I can have. I just don't want too much power to start out with.

Think about the gearing, a riding mower isn't fast, but it is powerful. I'm assuming you know about pulley swaps and that kind of thing, so really when they grow older a new belt and set of pulleys can change the entire game!

Plus, parts are CHEAP!
