TIG welding a shovel together.

So I bought a shovel from home depot, then it broke the first time
I used it. It was a crappy shovel. I TIG welded it back together just for the heck of it. Probably the most boring video I have ever made in my life.

I recently mig welded a $100 shovel back together. Looked like new when I got done but I ground too much bead off in the interest of "drag" because it broke again along the exact same line.

Any decent grade of shovel will most likely be made of medium to high carbon steel that has been heat treated for strength. If you just fire up the welder and run a quick pass or two, you're taking an already hardened part and turning the weld zone into the equivalent of glass.

At the very least you'll need to temper the weld zone to try and draw the hardness back.....

Yeah... about that.... judging from the way the shovel just bent instead of broke, i'm going to say its not hardened. This shovel should have had a disclaimer "although it looks nice, this is meant for soft potting soil applications only"

So far so good though. Hasn't broken apart yet!
