This whole "old thread bump" thing really has no easy solution in my mind. Sure, it might be possible to set an expiry date for your own thread, but who will do it? A select few of us, at best. Everything else will still be open. Now and then, someone will revive an old thread with a legitimate post, be it useful information, an update, or maybe a pertinant question. I don't really have a problem with this, some folks might, I suppose. Unfortunately, I really think this is more of a self-regulatory thing, and you all know what that means. It's going to happen. All we can really do is try to discourage it.

I joined a model-building forum some time back, and not only was there the usual "Terms Of Service" stuff, you also had to write a blurb about yourself within a certain time period, an introduction. If you failed to do so, it was thought that you were either a spammer or not particularly interested, and your account was deleted. It might seem snooty, but I've got to tell you, it worked well.

Maybe there's another way around the dead thread thing. What if all threads automatically locked after x amount of time, period. Then, if someone had something legit to say or ask on it, you'd have to create a new thread with your question or comment, and a link to the locked old thread. The old thread then stays locked, never to return to the top of the list, and I doubt someone would go to the trouble of creating a whole new thread with a link to the old one, just to post a stupid smiley...

What you you guys think?

I like the ideas. For locked threads though, the OP should be able to unlock it in case theres an update.

It can get a touch annoying when the thread's old enough that when it's bumped we think it's a new thread, only to find out otherwise. Or we think there might be some good, new info in there. Those of us with less-than-lightning-speed internet connections suffer more.
