think I got some metal in my index finger. o.O

Ok, I know here at diygk, we aren't trained medical staff but that's okay haha. yesterday I was just messing around in my garage, tinkering with nuts and bolts and engines . What else am I supposed to do in a garage? Anyway last night I noticed discomfort in the tip of my finger and it resembled the pain of having a wooden splinter (we've all had one before.). I'm pretty sure I can see a little shard under the dead layer of skin on top. How do I go about removing this from my finger? Whenever my dad would get a wooden splinter, he takes a sewing needle or a pin and scrape at the top layer tediously until the splinter can be removed by the means of tweezers. Is this the best way ? It's not a big splinter, but it hurts if my finger applies force to something. Haha not very often people post about this kind of stuff, but if someone can give me a pointer (no pun intended XD), I'd be more than greatful .

i have had metal splinters. What I usually do is bite at the skin until I can get it out. YUM.
In all seriousness, I would try the needle and tweezers. They can get nasty if you dont get them out.

A sharp knife works for me... just take the finger off and dont have to worry about getting more!

No really, I use my pocket knife. Sometimes its handy to be able to cut the top layer of skin...

Nail clippers are also good to cut the top layer of skin relatively pain-free.

i used to get that all the time. pick something up or run your hand over a piece of metal and get a shard stuck in.

its been a while since it happened (hopefully not again lol)

but i usually took a nail clipper or knife or anything to slit the skin and remove it. tweezers work good when it still sticks out a little

EDIT: remember its not just gonna go away... only get worse and when it starts rusting you have big problems and should go to the doctor if you cant get it yourself..

And for extra fun, spray it with brake or carb cleaner...that seems to be my favorite thing to do to myself lately...

Paint stripper is also good! I think my absolute favorite is that gel stripper that gets on your hands and takes you awhile to realize that it's been eating your skin - and it's even better when it gets on a previous "owwie" or under my wedding ring...

Dont forget to steralize the clippers ex ex. There is alot of nasty bugs on nail clippers.
I usally just take a match to the needle. Then Mommy takes it out. & kisses my Owie.

i get them a fair bit

as was said a needle and tweezers work well

if its too deep then just leave it

who knows where it goies or if it can rust that fast but they usualy only last a day
