hi from Puerto Rico

recently I was at a car show and they had all types of scooters and carts it was a big place, thats where it struck me. can I build an electric trike to get around. I have a 36V 800W motor, controller plus plenty scrap steel i'd only use it to go around, lots of stop and go, plus I am close to 300 lbs. can it be done? will a jackshaft help on the torque end? again thanks for adding me i'm in Puerto Rico.

800W can get surely move you along, but allow me to say:
"maybe walking a few more steps isn't a bad idea.. considering"

Anyhow, IDK what motor you got, assuming a 3k rpm my1020 derivative..
and if we further assume race kart wheels (11" diameter)
I think a jackshaft isn't a bad idea at all
to slow things down (have a safe speed at the crowded car show)
and giving you a torque benefit

13:1 should do
giving you ~12km/h [7.5mph] and hopefully the torque for 450 lbs (batteries weigh a lot)
So motor 10T->JSin 26T, JSout 10T-> Axle 50T for example

Didin't mean to offend, I have a 140kg+ relative myself and he's not getting along too well,
after a heart attack he's now unable to walk more than say 100m or so until he needs to sit down and recover. I partly blame his weight... and it breaks my heart

But most importantly
I'm happy to hear you intend to share the progress with us.
If you have any questions, be welcome to ask,
just keep in mind the more info we have on what you are dealing with the better and easier we can provide a correct answer
(short for share pics when in doubt)

different motors have different specs
some are low torque high speed configs,
some others the other way around,
some are already geared, some not..
brushless brushed EV or RC aaaand the list goes on.

For a proper more educated guess we would need to know what bred you're dealing with of course

not offended, I know its for my health. having a hard time finding the sprockets you suggested, where can i find them?

depends on size (chain size, not toothcount)
that's why I asked for specs and pics...
Many motors are shipped with T8F sprockets, which are actually quite difficult to find.
Some electro scooter websites list a handfull of tooth counts, but since the chain itself isn't exactly strong at all, it's quite pointless to even try above a certain weight;

Contact Functional Artist, ask if he still has some of his sprockets available.
it's #35 (for all I know) and much easier to find matching jackshaft and axle sprockets for.

Another option might be industrial sprocket retailers/manufacturers
they usually carry several different chainsizes and a multitude of different sprocket types.
(and sizes)

IDK what shaft your motor actually has so I cannot point you in the right direction
