My name is Chad, I recently joined the forum (today)and like it very much. I joined the forum because I burned my Tav2 belt with my new 11 hp Honda. Does anybody know if I can replace it with a common automotive belt of a similar size ?

Nope, not unless you have a 20-series (symetrical belt), I think all TAV2's are assymetric belts - that is, one side of the belt has a different angle than the other. Good info on identifying them, as well as parts, here: http://www.gokartsupply.com/comet.htm

Depending on which belt you need it may be available at a local store if they sell Rotary brand belts.

You should also know that TAV2's are based on the Comet 30-series, which is rated for max 8hp (iirc), so your 11hp is going to be pushing things, pardon the pun... you might want to consider upgrading to a Comet 40-series or larger, need to weigh the cost of a new CVT vs. belts.

Oh, and WELCOME!!! :cheers2: :cheers2: :cheers2:

If your in a pinch yes, I used I think a 22" v belt once, my kart was like 10 blocks away from my house, I was at a friends, and the belt snapped, so I walked home grabbed a few belts, one kinda fit so I drove it home, by time I got home the belt was about a 1/4 wide by the end, but a new belt is like 25$

NOPE. Not at all. The TAV2 is an asymmetrical unit. The appropriate belt has an 18* angle on one side, a 2* angle on the other side, and a 3/4" top with. No automotive style belt will work. For that matter, no automotive belt will properly work on any CVT, as the angles and sizes are very specific.

Order a proper replacement belt of the correct length, and determine why the old one cooked.

The first thing I suspect is the fact that you're running a GX340 with a CVT that IIRC is rated for 8hp... You might be able to get away with it if you are geared low enough, and I'm guessing you're not. Please describe your kart, provide your rear tire diameter, tooth counts on both sprockets, and riding terrain.

Welcome to the forum.

Yup, a TAV2 is only rated to 8HP. You can sometimes push then SLIGHTLY further, but you will be going through belts at a rapid rate.

Like toystory says, if you gear low enough with smallish tyres, you shuld get away with running a TAV2, but you will still go through belts

I have an 8 H.P. (see above) but can't run it due to the 7/16 tapered shaft. I feel like "grinding" it to 3/4" but fear the "ground" shaft will eventually break off ( it happened to me once with a 5 HP Tecumseh ). This is my first round with a torque converter and I love it ! No more donuts for me (cent.clutches). I just ordered a replacement belt $25. Truth be told, I ran my kart with only spot welds of where I wanted the plate and forget to complete my welds. My cousin jumped a small ramp and the GX340 fell on it's side and gobbled up the belt. :feedtroll: 2013-01-15_09-56-31_729.jpg

The biggest problem with that is it won't be even, no matter how careful you are. the best idea is to have it machined, find an adaptor or replace the crank altogether. Also, how do you grind 7/16" down to 3/4"?

Yup

7/8 to 3/4. Just experimenting. The ground shaft works. I just got a new 18 hp V twin by Briggs, I'm slapping it onto a small kart with a T.Converter :smiley_omg: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA !
