i have a 18hp briggs engine and i cannot find a clutch, torque converter or anything rated to a 18 hp engine. it is going on my dune buggy with some of the buckshot mudder atv tires and a live axle rear end, no suspension. all i need is the clutch or tc or a gearbox with a tc in it.

i'm pretty sure a 40 series would hold up well.........provided the engine isn't highly modified ( as in a 18 hp briggs puttin out 30 hp!)

The Comet 40 series CVT is rated to 18hp, and is capable of more than that. There are other Comet CVT's that can take more (drawing a blank on model #'s right now). There are several high-dollar CVT's (Like CVTech) that can handle a LOT more.

As for standard centrifugal clutches, I'm sure any of the big name, high-dollar breeds will handle your 18hp without breaking a sweat. However- given your purpose, you'll want a CVT.

Bottom line? Comet 40.

dunebuggydiy,
Sounds like a Torque Converter would be best for your kart, but what diamiter is the output-shaft on your engine? (1", 1-1/8" or 1-1/4"?)

Also, Does the output shaft taper down to a smaller size at the end like the top picture?

Or is it the non-tapered type with a keyway machined in, like the left end of this pic? (also, does your crank have a threaded hole for a bolt to screw in to the end?)

If they at horribly flawed
Cracked up and damaged then they may explode but otherwise u are not taking them nere their limit

But a fl250 one may not work
As it is a 2 stroke it likely has a high engagement
