Hey, first post by the way.

I have been trying to figure out a way to control the speed of my electric motor (For a kart, obviously :) ) and I can't figure out how to use a standard controller.

I have searched for speed controllers on line, and can't figure out how they will connect to the motor and batteries, or how they actually control the speed without a variable resister.

Sorry for the silly question, but I'm a massive armature in this field and would love someone to shed some light on this problem.

Quite the wit Mackey,
Do a search of PWM [pulse width modulation] That's what is used instead of a variable resistor. I doesn't waste nearly as much energy in the form of heat.
Show me what controller your looking at and your motor or at least something similar and I'll try to help.
Hey, I'll attach a schematic of how I wired my gokart, the motor and the controller. Pay no attention to the 20 ohm resistor and the shunt it probably won't apply to your gokart.

Red/Black connector for batteries.

Yellow/Black (or similar, THICKer wires - about as thick as battery wires) for motor.

One for switch (on/off)

One for brake kill (prevents throttle and brake pressed at same time)

One for battery meter (just ignore)

One for charger.

If this is the wrong type of device it would be good to know, just in case I'm wasting a load o' cash.

I looked at the controllers on the site, each controller has
a wiring diagram with it. But I'm guessing, you don't have an off the shelf motor? Gotta know about the motor before anyone can tell you how to wire it.
If you can, pick a controller that is the proper voltage and has a high enough wattage for your motor. Give the number for that controller and we will assume your motor has a black and a red wire coming out of it.
Then we will try to help you with the wiring.

I know this is slightly un-related, but I've bought 2 batteries for the motor that I linked above (^). And I'm not sure there the right specification to power the motor.

Would somebody mind sharing there expertise? I've got 2, 12V 20AH Batteries.

The motor is linked in previous post (500W, 36V 18.3A) I will be running it at 24V.
