so here's a little story...

Ever since I was in middle school I had been going to this empty piece of land east of my parents house. its about 2 square miles of land, don't know if it has only one owner. or its split up. Recently as of like 2 years now, the land has been developed a little, nothing major, just put a fence up in one part, around a drainage ditch. and some no trespassing sign's in another part. I haven't ever met the owner of the land, but recently I decided to go back out there to see what's changed.

So I'm out there, and decide to go to the creek - it can be kind of swampy sometimes because I live in Florida. But wasn’t that day.

I'm out there for maybe 2 hours walking around decide to go back because some clouds are rolling in. Thing is I left my dirt bike [that has tags on it] back at the entrance to the swamp off a dirt path, where I came in at, I didn't see no- no trespassing sign's

Come out of woods, I see a white truck, figured its for the power transformer station that's near by off the service road. Think nothing of it.

Walking north, away from the white truck, I had to cut through some bush, come down the walk way where my bike is sitting. white truck parked by it, some guy with a rifle in hand, wearing an high vis orange jacket. I yell, "Walking through" the guy says nothing. I walk forward, some old guy driving the truck, younger guy with the gun. He says "what are you doing out here" I explain what I'm doing. and he keep's asking me "why would someone want to be walking through a swamp." I simply explain that those are my intentions and that why does he really care? Asks me if I had a gun, I had no gun. tells me he could shoot me If he wanted to and completely get away with it. tells me I’m trespassing. I tell him that I’m sorry, I didn't know. I'll leave. tells me to stay right there, gun still pointed at me. old guy holding his cellphone out w/ camera on. I explain that I didn't want any trouble, that ill leave and won’t come back. Makes a call on his phone, says nothing, must of not picked up. He tells me to wait right there, that he’s trying to reach the owner, 10 minutes go by, its pouring raining, all I got is a t-shirt and a sweat shirt on. Being held at gun point. He informs me that he can’t get a hold of the owner, so he called the sheriff on his personal phone. I told him that I wasn’t doing anything wrong, trespassing yes, but I didn’t know I was. He tells me that he’ll figure out what to do once the sheriff arrives, if I have no prior convictions that he’ll let me go. I get him to talk some more, to give up more information. He basically does not own the land, nor does the older guy in the truck, they basically go out there to keep boar off the land, not contracted just as a favor.

So about 15 minutes goes by, its still raining. And its cold. Sheriff shows up, finally. Nice guy, way nicer then the two who had me at gunpoint. They talk to him first, then he talks to me, I give him my drivers license and he runs my motorcycle plate. Me the younger guy, and the sheriff standing in a group. Sheriff ask’s what he wants to do, the guy says since I had no prior run in’s that I can go, as long as I stayed off the land, and tell my friends who might come in to stay out too. I ask for the owners name/phone number as the sheriff is walking back to his car. The old guy yell’s “DON’T GIVE IT TO HIM!” I look dumbly at him, and the guy tells me that I don’t need to know that kind of information? I questioned him for a little bit, then put on my helmet, and gloves [both soaking wet, and cold!] and ride off back to the house.

It’s been a few months since this happened. And I’m still a little upset about how the two guys treated me, I have no action or civil suit, nor do I want to take this kind of thing to court. It wasn’t even about the gun either because I wasn’t even the slightest bit scared of the gun the whole time, or them. What im mostly mad at, is they wouldn't give me the owners name/phone number so I can contact said owner, to get permission to be on his property, all I want to do out there, is pick dewberries/wild grapes/blackcherrys when the season is around, and take pictures of plants/birds because it’s a haven for native birds and plants! I would of even agreed to wearing a high vis vest/shirt/hat at all times out there, and not be out there the days his friends he allows to hunt out there. [the two guys in the truck]

I still need to head on over to the tax collectors building [parcels office] to get land map records and names/phone numbers of anyone who might own that nice piece of natural swamp land, to attempt to get permission to access that land for gathering/fishing[the creek]

but yeah, this rustled my jimmies, and still rustles them!

... tells me he could shoot me If he wanted to and completely get away with it.

Not sure bout the 'laws' in Fl... but here in NC, unless 'hired/paid' by the 'land' owner, or the land owner himself(or a cop), a 'friend' cant hold a trespasser at gunpoint for being on 'someone elses' property, well they could... but if prosecuted(small claims court...25$)... theyd lose in court and would probably be charged a fine/restitution for distress('I was scared... I want $$$!!!').

As far as the owner of the land and getting hold of him/her... you could check the county clerks office(deeds office) and see what they have for public information. If you know the actual address of the land/lots I think you can Google it and hunt the # down to contact said owner/realtor(at a cost of a few dollars im sure).

I personally woulda pulled out my phone when they pulled theirs out n called 911 sayin someone was holding you hostage against your will(in the rain=torchering you) at gun point... and its not the property owners or security...lol THAT woulda made em regret being a nosey body!

... and when they asked if you had a gun... I woulda said... "no... but I got a REALLY expensive lawyer whom has a reputation for convicting @$$holes!...lol"

Some people just have god-complexes.

Last year I found a guy wandering around out back (I'm on 10 acres). So... I asked him what was up. He explained he was just wandering and sightseeing, and asked if it was ok to continue. I resisted the urge to shoot him (easy to resist- I don't own a gun) and gave him permission to keep on exploring...

Haha thanks guys, I'll respond more when I get more time. I would like to say though, no need to work out a civil suit. even though it meant free money, I don't believe in doing things like that. I'd rather leave it be. and annoy them by legitimate means... those are the types of people who do have that god like complexion, so If I get the owners permission, and when the owner tells them this, I'm sure they wont be to happy about it. You know, not being able to hunt from a running vehicle and all.. and possibly getting caught doing it. [oh I have other friends who go out there who've seen them shoot deer from their truck - with it running] and that's a big ol' no no by Florida law.. of course that's probably why they don't want other people out there, is because their harvesting animals by illegal means... of course this is just speculation after all...

Sounds like the best thing to do is just call a Game Warden and tell him that. I don't know about Florida but in Texas- we take poaching VERY seriously and our Game Wardens are extremely cunning and adept at catching them.

One example is their beloved decoy "Timex"....A stuffed whitetail deer so named because it's been shot so many times. It's rigged with a remote controlled tail to help seal the deal and has been the downfall of many a would-be poacher.

Yeah- I don't know what the laws are like there, but our Ministry Of Natural Resources takes illegal hunting and fishing so seriously, they have the legal power to sieze EVERYTHING you possess in relation to the crime. Your gear, guns, fishing stuff, boat, trailer, truck... everything. Even on your own land- if laws are being broken, such as hunting or fishing out of season or using illegal means to take the animal.

Yes- In Texas, the only law enforcement officer that can legally enter your home without a warrant is a game warden. Here too they can seize any property used in the aid of the illegal taking of game- not sure on the fish tho.....

It's pretty much the same thing here, game wardens can take everything you own if they wanted too. BEST JOB EVER! lol! a few friends an I have talked about after getting permission to go ahead and be on the property. to wait for them, and record their doings then submitting to a personal friend who works for fish and wildlife. Personally the way I look at it, shoot all the boar you want. Invasive species to north america anyway. but as soon as you start hunting deer without tags.. that becomes a problem. We've even found gator traps all along the creek of course, because during that time, the FWC hadn't issued the lotto for gator trapping tags, We removed the traps ourselves, probably why their so anal about me [us] being out there, because they KNOW without proof, we're the ones destroying their poaching means. and they can't do anything about it, other then catching us trespassing..

of course a sweet talker like myself can always seem like a nice innocent fellow. ;)

IMO... over kill! Nice lathe though... newer than the one I use at the shop... but guaranteed a voltage guzzler!

I don't knock old lathes, because I know, and I'm sure you know. the older ones can sometimes cut better. some fresh bearings, some grease, GOOD cutting bit. you can do wonders on a 45 year old lathe, that you cannot do as easily on a 5 year old lathe.. part due to the weight... Those cast iron/cast steel lathes are absolutely amazing. I got to see a 1955 lathe, 1963, 1971, and then 1990, and 2003, and a 2005 lathe all lined up next to each other, same cutting bits, same RPM, same steel stock. all cutting in one pass [the stock was fairly true] and they showed off the differences between the cuts. I think the 1955 lathe did the best, if memory serves correctly, and all the "later" model lathes did the worse, I think the 1990 one was the worst, too much chatter, even when the guy"s" were constantly adding more cutting lube. also the 2005 had that "harmonic" vibrations problem or something like that.

oh, and I know I have derailed my own thread, what ever... but to contine to derail it....

DIY EXHAUST GASKET! JERRY RIGGED! I think the picture at the bottom speaks for itself... I'll have to report back in when my bike is up and running. I think there's suppose to be something here.. that's never been there since I've had the bike, with my straight pipe tho, sometimes I get this very annoying clicking noise - kind of sounds like lose valves, ones that need to be re-shimmed. but I know it's not, because If I reach my foot around and set it on top of the header/muffler area the noise stops.. so instead of buying a silly gasket to stop some squeaking, I made one... :D

a piece of copper steel wool?
some stripped speaker wire..
some pure lead - from a past project..
a butane torch..

now thats DIY. lol!

Hendey built some great equipment; the problem is that they've been gone for a long time, and no one supports them. You would be on your own for repair parts. Another annoying thing many old manufacturers did was have parts like the ball bearings custom built to their spec; this means if you can't find someone with a stash of N.O.S. parts lying around you would be S.O.L......
