Regenerative charging/braking with a 3 post motor?

Apart from the controller, can a 3 post DC motor provide regenerative charging? They are so different from a normal brushed 2-wire DC motor.

ive never tried this, and i dont work with electric, but you could put a belt/chain to an alturnator, that charges the battery when you move. you have a battery powering the motor, and a big loop... correct me if im wrong

For anyone who wants to know the answer to this, it's yes, it can be used as a generator, but it's complicated because you need a separate circuit to power up the field coils before the armature coils can generate any power
