QI wireless charging in my 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

After driving a loaner 2016 Sierra with QI charging in the center console then getting the iPhone 8 I decided to see what people were doing to put QI in older vehicles. I ordered the charger below since it boasts 3 coils and I believe once stripped down, it just may fit in between the 2 "halves" of the console lid. I would plan on getting 12V from the DVD controls located at the back of the console but in worst case I can run a USB from the back of my Pioneer h/u to the console. I'll post lots of pictures but just wanted to make this announcement and hear your thoughts.

Ohhh the convenience on permanent power drain..

Okay, this thing needs 5V 2 Amps to work properly (based on the item description)
I assume an 8W coil...

You cannot run a USB from your pioneer, it's more than likely not allowing more than maybe 500mA.. (the max current for usb 2.0 data devices) rarely 800mA (charging older phones)
USB 3.0 have a 900mA current for data application (not tested the max current IDK..)
beefiest data USB terminals so far are the ones on TV sets to power external harddrives (1.5A)
And I doubt you pioneer pushes that or more on any data port!
USB with more power come from dedicated power adapters

So that's what you're going to need.. a 12V to 5V ~2A power converter.

hoping that the 12V wiring you have access to is
toggled by the ignition key (otherwise it's an always on device draining the car battery 24/7)
and maybe more importantly scaled to allow that kind of currents (worst case it's also 2Amps since I have no idea what's in those chinese buck converters)
maybe you want to measure it's drain under load first

The charger showed up and I immediately started taking it apart. I do wish I went a little slower because there is a very aggressive adhesive on the very brittle backing of the coils. I pried at it with a knife and it started to crack so I got out the heat gun and warmed it up. That freed up most of the adhesive except a concentrated patch in the middle which ultimately broke free. The coils were undamaged so I began to proceed. Notice I use my old pill containers to hold small hardware and parts, especially if fixing an ipad or iphone. Now I had to trim some of the molded plastic support casts and then hot glued the coils and circuit board to the bottom side of the top half of the lid. I'm still waiting for the step down converter to finish the install but I'm pretty impressed myself so far.

This is very interesting. I have no idea what you're doing, but it sure looks neat.
