Who remembers pull tabs?

I swim the San Marcos river here in Texas about once a week. I like to take my snorkel and see what I can see. There's lots of fish, there is native Texas wild rice (endangered and only grows in this river) cool shells from when Texas was under the oceans a million years ago, and, PULL TABS!

If you are a youngster, you don't remember these except the few times you see them at a park, I'm guessing. And even I'm too young to actually have used them. The modern "pop top" that's on all beer and soda these days was patented in 1975, and implemented shortly after.

But before that? Invented in 1965, the "pull tab" replaced having to use a church key to open your beer! Shazzam, right?! But, what the heck do you do with a pull tab after you've pulled it free from that frosty beverage? Well you tossed it in the river, duh!

Back to present day in our story, when I swim I started spotting a bunch of these on the sandy bottom in spots of the San Marcos river. There's not a lot of other trash, very little actually. But the pull tabs! Queue up Jimmy Buffet -- "blew out my flip flop, stepped on a pop top" ..

So I've started picking them out of the river on my floats. I snorkel the section, it's maybe 1/4 or 1/2 a mile and grab tabs. I've collected about 150 in just a couple of months! Each time I snorkel I'd guess I pick up anywhere from 10 - 20.

I'll have to get an underwater pic, it's astounding. The biggest concentration of them is at the city park, where there are tons of people in the water. (3-8 feet deep, and very very clear - it's spring fed)

Anyway, I wanted to share what I've been finding. These tabs were pulled from their cans AT LEAST 41 years ago, and are still there, waiting to cut someone's foot.

It's worth thinking about our planet, and litter in general. These tabs will never decompose.

I want to implore you! Please don't litter in our public places. Toss that junk in a trash can, and pick up litter when you can. It's not hard. Just reach down, pick it up, and toss it. Just because someone else is part of the problem doesn't mean you can't be part of the solution.

And as for the fate of these re-found pull tabs? I think I'm making a tribal necklace out of them. Why not? :wai:

Even though patented in 75... it was many years later before they became as universal as they are now. As a young man...I remember quite a few people that used to pull those old style tabs off and drop them in the can....One day...a friend of mine swallowed one and had to go to the hospital....guess that wasn't as cool as it looked, huh?

I used to find old steel beer cans in Benbrook lake back in the early 70's snorkeling. Not a clear lake by any means...so , with less than 2' visibility....you had to dive to see anything....but it was fun.

Floating the Frio , however, was a totally different experience. Probably 8'+ visibility although almost all the river is less than 4' deep.

But where I find most of those pull tabs is underground. They are a huge PITA when metal detecting. It's embarrassing, though, to drive Texas Highways and see the amount of litter tossed out of cars. I used to get get flack for having a trashy car....and I would say: "Better to have a trashy car than be a trashy person. Admit it, I've been in your car....and didn't see a litter bag...so you keep your car clean by tossing your crap out the window...nice....now shut up before I punch you out."

well you can dispose your trash back home to have both.. a clean car interior AND a clean soul ;)

littering is well... douchebaggery to say the least.

It wasn't cool in the eighties and it's not today (and likely does not have much of a chance to ever be)
And frankly.. takeaway cups from that discusting green [I wouldn't even call it coffee] coffee shop nowadays is IMHO worse than cans back then.
the sheer amount and the fact that plastic linings and lids to not rott either but has instead a great chance of being swallowed by animals and eventually (in case of fish) be able to end up in your stomach as well...
I'm not liking that too much either.

So yeah
Don't Litter! (period)

I am a metal detectorist too, and I find way too many of these. They sound just like gold, so you gotta dig them. I remember using them as a kid. I hate them!!

I say bring back the church keys and flat top beverage cans... maybe on a few selected items for nostalgia purposes. I say that because people will still take the effort to snap off the captive pull rings from modern aluminum cans just to be jerks. So eliminate it.

I don't know the church key experience; that was before my time but I've seen old movies and such showing it in use.

Rats. Or Hallelujah?! Someone already thought of it...

Jeez guys, everyone around here knew you didn't throw them away, you made a chain out of them!

Mine used to be about 20 feet long, until at a cruise night someone grabbed it from my mirror and now this is all I have left....

There once was a time when nobody thought twice about whipping sh*t out the car window.
The medians and sides of the highways looked like spilled dumpsters.
There was a billboard for something like every fifty yards.

There was even an outfit that would put up billboards with a story on them that would stretch for many miles, so drivers wouldn't get bored while driving :???:

I believe it was Elenore Roosevelt who put her foot down, found a crying Indian, got the trash picked up, and got the billboards 86'd.

LOL Roosevelt was president during WWII. The Indian guy was in the 70s. (Fun fact: He was actually an Italian actor!) But yeah, tossing stuff out the window is just dumb. It's SO EASY to just throw it in the trash. This is a 1st world country.

Oh, you may be thinking of Lady Bird Johnson -- she spearheaded a lot of the highway beautification.

The story billboards were for Burma Shave. They're funny how quaint that seems now.

Hey, I'll take any you want to get rid of.... seriously. Let me know the cost.

They probably aren't still good for making those chains, they're kinda brittle

I believe it was Ike who passed legislation for the interstate Highway system, after being so impressed with the Audubon while in Germany during WWII. So it could not have benn Roosevelt that pushed an anti litter Campaign.
Besides FDR would have started a Government $ocial program to cleanup the Interstates!

Every Billboard in San Diego is Taken by an Indian Casino!
Sort of Ironic to the 1970s Crying Italian Indian.
But to tie this all together...
They also use Story boards When they can get 3 or 4 signs in a row for the same Casino.

Hey! Give a guy a break! This was like a half a century ago! ;)
My first beers I snuck out of my Dad's cooler after a day fishing.

I remember them being Hamm's. They had the pull tabs, I drank about six of them, and threw them under my bed. I think I was five or six. I can still remember the taste!

My Grandfather got blamed for them!:D
