l'm still tryin to unnastan why the flywheel key sheared off.

Blades hit something? Normal wear and tear? Poorly running engine with backfiring? Key was porous and crystalline from poor metallurgy? Loose flywheel nut? All probably a matter of time.

Hey, when did Stoopid go John Deere green? 🤢🤮

Labor day weekend and it rained purdy much all weekend. Labor day is the beginning of the annual rain festival, it runs through July 5.
So we stayed in and completed another temporary final version of rear axle center section. I think we be closing in on the final final version at least temporarily.
l'm sure yer sick of the temporary final pics, but here's one more.

Moving forward slowly...
Got chain now (50H) and a fresh dilenna. So where do you go when ya need expert opinions? DIYGK of course! So, here's the situation.
There is no chain adjustment. Can't move the engine and can't move the axle. A chain tensioner/adjuster Is in order. I pose the question to our panel of experts.
in the pic below ya can see the basic setup. The vertical tube is a tube in a tube.
The red arrow is a pin, the sprocket can move 1.5 inches (spring loaded).
I'll put a pivot at the bottom (yellow). that way the whole thing moves right to take up slack. (Yeah l know the chains too long) by 1 link. I can't take 2 cuz its too short. I will probably need a half link. The thing l need to decide is, should the bottom pivot be adjustable and lockable? Or should it be spring loaded?

I vote for adjustable and lockable. If it were a normal situation where chain tension was controlled by sliding the engine, would you want it spring loaded or bolt down tight?

Isnt a spring loaded tensioner an issue when it comes to reversing? Suddenly all the slack is up top with nothing to take it up.

Ive always assumed thats why you see so many spring loaded tensioners on minibikes.

I recently made one and made it lock.

Side note: I would NEVER have believed that a skateboard wheel would have the durability to successfully be used as a tensioner roller. -But it works perfectly.

I would use a spring loaded tensioner. But I’m weird like that. In my way of thinking a dynamic tensioner has less chance of cracking with all the loading unloading than a solid mounted one that absorbs all the shock. I would also add a tensioner to the top of the chain also to relieve some of the shock load from the chain.

I think I have a solution.
Look at the vertical tubes. You’ll see two pieces top piece fits inside the bottom piece there is a spring inside and there is 1.5 inches of travel between the two pieces. The arch slot in the plate thing at the bottom is no longer used the new revision went another method.
The assembly stands on the foot at the bottom of the pic. That gets welded in. The vertical arm pivots right about 30° or as necessary to take up slack. The spring allows for that little extra as described above.
I guess it’s a hybrid. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s update when prototype 2 is in set free.
