Found a little time to play with this today....jeeze....I almost had to reverse engineer the parts and figure out what was what....gotta locate all the parts...but maybe I can get back to this contraption....

Cut the bottom and did some painting....I post some more tomorrow....

Well....later on I will explain my thinking on dialing on the track and engagement points....but...I played with this a bit today....hopefully....I have it right....

In the first diagram: "A", You can see the line of travel of the piston is even with the bottom of the pulley. You can see it has a full range of travel....however, it's weak point is shown in the diagram. First, it's been backing up until this point, so it has zero power, at this point, the leverage is the weakest....now to even consider engagement to start crushing a can....it would need to go inbetween where it is now and another 1/4 turn....at that point , however, the angle between the piston and connecting rod would be very weak....(We'll come back to this a couple of times later.

Looking at "B": We see the same plane of travel with the the piston at it's strongest position : max force of angle, and nearly the max inertia
Now, this is great to start crushing a can, but from there to somewhere around that x coming up is all the travel you get in that direction....So, what I shot for in Poboy Crusher one was x on the left (to engage the can) to x on the right to finish the crush.

That actually worked very well....however, dummy that I am, I failed to consider something.....Look back at figure "A".....Now.....this is where the piston needs to change direction on the backstroke...only at the top (12: o'clock)....(approximately) ....anyway that sharp angle promoted binding, (especially with the sloppy tolerances on crusher one).....So...I had to look to improve the angles at that point ..

Raising the travel line towards the center is the obvious solution....(as well as a longer rod....but I'm not going there right now....

So....in "C": We see the benefits and drawbacks of a centerline track:

First off....it has the longest possible travel, however, obviously, it would have to get to x before you can even think about trying to crush a can...and then you would be at "D" midway through the crushing process....not good....

Now, you could engage around 10:00. (remember, this is turning counterclockwise) ....and you would basically have the same powerstroke as crusher one...The problem is at "D": we have that weak point that basically can either jam or go backwards! !!!

So tomorrow I post up some pics of how I set it up with the critical points of contact and direction change....(It's all a bit of a crapshoot and a "best guess " until it fires up....

Ok...Before I talk about the angles....I want to mention a few things:

If you look at the last pic in post #16.... You can see how I laid out the roller skate bearings recesses....and you will see a straight line for the bearing anchor points, and a curved line as a reference to keep them parallel to each other....

Those lines tell a story: there is really no way to put a straight line in a circle....and have it follow it. This is why all bearings that travel in this direction are ball bearings....So those roller skate bearings are going to be constantly skidding sideways as they travel around....that's the reason for the plastic laminate....hopefully, the side loads will be negligible, and between the bearings turning, and the low friction of hard plastic and steel....the small amount of skidding will not be an issue for a long time....(If they rode on wood, they would quickly make a trough.

So....also....the laminate backing behind the Corian strips to slow the wear of the steel ears....(which, hopefully, again will be minimal in contact and force.

Back to the angles: Pic #1 shows the angle where the piston will start the crushing process....(This is the point that requires the most force and inertia...) I'm very happy with both.

#2 shows the position when the crush is completed....again, very happy with that angle....(still very strong)

#3 shows the point at which the piston changes direction on the backstroke....(Again....I'm extremely pleased with that angle, don't anticipate any binding issues there.)

BTW: Unfortunately, this is going to have to be shelved again....I thought maybe I had purchased all the nuts, bolts, and washers...but if so, I can't seem to locate them....and I just can't justify spending the few dollars it'll take to buy them ATM....

However, although I have the concept in my head, I don't have a detailed blueprint for the ejection parts....and I DO have paper and pencil...so I'll do a little of that...

I have materials to make the bottom trough as well, and the feed system is still pretty fuzzy and complicated in my head...but I could start putting it on paper....but, I also need to concentrate on generating some income....(hopefully steady for a change) !!!!!!!

I can see the angle iron frame, etc., but the questions mount: like what did you use for casting material?!?!? Concrete??? Left over Spackle from a drywall install???? Used ground up kitty litter mixed with cigarette ashes and butts with stale beer as the working fluid?!?!?!? :ack2: :ack2: :ack2:

Not my bedframe!!!! (A man's gotta have his souvenirs! )

Seriously, while that piston does resemble the bottom of a pop bottle...it was one of the reasons I liked it for a piston.....it has quite a few attack points and should make a dead center lock almost not happening....

Another will become clear very soon....BTW : It was really hard welding bed frame rails to plaster!:rolleyes:
