Hey guys and gals, if you haven't signed up for Nextdoor.com yet there's no better time than as you read this post. It's social media for your specific neighborhood. You can promote your small business, help your neighbors reconnect with lost pets, gossip about the road construction, etc.

My little ask is that you use my invitation link to sign up:

https://nextdoor.com/invite/jpxplxgjzrstpqldzkms

It helps me climb the inviter list and that's all there is to it. I wont see any of your personal information or even be notified that you signed up.

My advice when signing up is to lock down your privacy settings. Mask your address and I have almost all the notifications for my neighborhood turned off. I subscribe to some threads, esp those that are talking about break ins near my house.

funny..
I had their info flyer in my mail box last week (snail mail that is)
with a taylored link to hook me up to "my neighboorhood" directly.
funny it's always a different link no matter how often I get one of those flyers.

But as with most things in the "social media" world...
I DO NOT sign up for anything that's hidden behind a login form as long as I do not know what's behind that door.

those come from your actual neighbors, the site allows you to send a few post cards and actually shows which homes in your area arent registered so you've had a couple different nabes invite you

Oh.. in case that was misleading on my behalf..
I do NOT think it's scam, I do believe that their intentions are sincere

Intention #1 however will be "make money with user data" since that is what social media does
Intention #2 is more than likely "Provide a good & usefull service for people to come and offer their data to us"

And I have no problem with that (not a fan of the first, but I accept that in case #2 applies to myself)

I can not check if the second applies to me personally without accepting the first,
buying a pig in a poke basically.
I don't do that!

Until a neighbor offers me a peek inside with his login credentials (a peek over his shoulder)
I can't judge and thus will not sign up.

That's just my personal opionon;
I want to know what I do sign up for before I do so.
imagine this fictional scenario:
only two people in my neighborhood (as they defined it*) are signed up at all
one is the douche from down the street and the other is my sister...
one I don't want to talk to at all, the other I can talk to in person.
where's the point?

* And their definition is flawed!
two minutes walk east, not a single street to cross and it's a different neighborhood, 15 min's west and several streets to cross getting into different postal code area even and it's still the same neighborhood according to the flyers they spread

Yeah.....ummm....I'm more of a get out and go door to door and meet your neighbors kinda guy. Been doing that lately. Something I kind of got away from when I was sick. Back to it now. Real life trumps Soreal media every time.

I would join, but I absolutely know that no one in my neighborhood, or town for that matter, would be members. That type of thing hasn't caught on here where I live

We use it, mostly to raise instant awareness of loose dogs and such. For instance, before using it, my first instinct to seeing a strange dog in my yard was shoot to kill. Now I shoo it away and let everyone know. Saves me loads of bullets.

So I live in typical suburbia, and some neighbors are the worst here. Low crime and an aging neighborhood where people are about to die and/or kids have moved out. I despise next door because:
1) people calling the cops on my neighbor because the tail end of their car is poking out of the driveway
2) people calling the city on my other neighbor because a piece of wood fell off their fence
3) people calling the cops on my other neighbor because their boat is parked in the driveway
4) talks of forcing everyone in the neighborhood to pay for a brick fence along a main road, insted of updating the existing wood one because the neighborhood needs to be more classy.(one of my main requirements when moving here was that we didnt have a home owners association for this and many other reasons).
5) endless gossip, **** flinging in others faces, and meaningless complaints from busybody's that have nothing better to do.

Another shining example of this is a few months ago, a kid threatened to shoot up the local highschool here on his snapchat story. All the kids screenshotted it and told their parents. This ended up on all the nextdoor websites, but as luck would have it, those dumb busybodys with administrative/blocking privileges basically shut down the messages about this and blocked many concerned parents that were posting about this because it "wasnt neighborhood related". Just blows my mind how stupid people are, especially when given a little bit of fake power.

You get the dumbest, most opinionated, most judgemental people posting up on these neighborhood websites, and you also get some good information.

What bothers me probably the most is that you get one or two bad apples complaining, and too introverted to reach out to a neighbor and say oh hey just so you know, i think you need to move yoru boat, fix your fence, or move your car if its not too much trouble. But no, they are too shy and petty to even do that. What ever happened to common courtesy and being a good neighbor. Sites like these just magnify the worst neighbors, and give them an audience that they can spam.

And finally, the last thing I want to do is sign up for this, then find out the whole neighborhood is complaining about some adult child terrorizing the concrete jungle with his open pipe mini bike, which will shortly bring about Armageddon. Ok thats the real reason why, not the others.

Glad I have 5 neighbors. Only one is the butthead of the "hood". The rest of us get along. And they are a quarter mile down the road from me so I just do what I do and don't give 2...

Don't miss city life at all.
