Hi everyone my name is rob and i live in Warwick,RI.I am new to carting.I had a few carts and home made mini bikes as a kid.Now as an adult i want to get into building one or buying a complete frame.I have no welding experience but i will try to learn soon.I have a 13 Hp Honda GX390 engine that was part of a wellmaintained power washer. Is this engine good for a cart?Is there anybody from RI with a frame or parts i can buy.Money is not the object, trying to put together a good set up is.I just found this site and i am blown away by the amount of information is here.I really like the videos T-Man posts he is a great inspiration for carting enthusiasts.Any help will be apreciated tyvm.

Hey,

I also live in RI, in east providence. I have a few karts (3) and i have 1 that i want to get rid of. Its a concession kart though so im not sure if youll want it. Basically a really heavy and well build street kart. It has slick tires in the back and some carlisles up front. i am in the process of installing the innertubes on the front tires. It has a 5.5hp engine on it currently but you can swap it with yours and get a new clutch and make something work. The back tires are also a very common size for lawn tractors so if you want offroad you should be able to just swap out the slicks with something that suits you better. It needs a new master cylinder though for the brakes to work. If you want it just let me know. If moneys not an obstacle then i want 600 for it. LOL im kidding. Somewhere around 200 is good because it is a good running kart and since your a fellow karter :) let me know...

on the other hand, That 13hp should work great on any kind of gokart. Loads of power and its a genuine honda so thats always a plus. Theres not much places for kart parts here in RI ive tried for days to find some with no luck.

Is this engine good for a cart?

Does its output shaft have a keyway machined in and look like the left end of this first pic?

Or does it tapper down smaller near the end, and not have a keyway like this pic below?

it runs and drives as it sits. ive had no luck bleeding the brakes so im guessing it needs a new mastercylinder but you may be able to bleed it and then you wont need it.

one of the brake lines had a crack so i threw it out, so one of the brakes is just not connected (it has dual rear disk brakes) but the other line is good, so some new lines wouldnt hurt or you can just use the one brake thats connected.

like i said im installing the innertubes into the fronts now so...

and if you dont want to use the big fiberglass body(which i dont, i just ride on a plank of wood. lol.) a seat.

onto your next question, to use your engine, youll need some sort of clutch, a torque converter would be your best bet to get the best performance out of the kart. and as you can see in the second to last pic the final drive is a cogged belt drive to a pulley so you would have to put the drive pulley on the end of the jackshaft to use that setup. or you can just change the current setup for a sprocket and chain setup.
