Welcome to the forum. Motorcycle engines (including those 500cc and up) are a good (and common) choice for powering projects. I largely suggest you take some time to cruise this forum, there's a lot of good info and ideas to be had.

Develop a design plan, and work from there. If you're careful about it, you could possibly even get the engine for free- by purchasing a complete bike for a good price and selling off what you don't use.

Many of us are in the process. ;) It all takes time and effort. Im making a GPZ750 off roader. What kind of kart are you looking at? Just do a search. There is a wealth of info around here, it really is quite impressive.

Welcome to the forum!

Iv building the same thing as rustydog but useing a GSXR 600

I'd highly recommend u don't just slap a race bike engine on a race kart but instead do it properly

Why don't you just regear your kart. You might be able to get more speed out of that GX160. What gearing do you have at the moment. Sprocket tooth counts etc

hi, thanks everyone for the replies, i was looking at buying a ROTAX racing chassis and them cutting and re-welding to mount the new engine, i'm looking at either a GSXR 600 engine or a CBR 600, either way i want everything to be done correctly with braking and running.

I plan to build an ON ROAD kart with about 50mm Ground clearance

And i have clocked my GX160 being followed by a car and its top speed is 57mph (86KPH) on flat with a 12t clutch and 64t sprocket

Why would you want to go any faster than this. It sounds a bit fast to me though. To put a 600cc engine on a racing kart is not generally a very wise idea unless you REALLY know what you are doing. You will have to reenforce the frame big time, and make sure that there is no shoddy workmanship and welding anywhere.

Can you weld? Are you confident in your welding abilities

Safety is our first concern

57mph is quick, just not quick enough after a year using it, i just would use the basic structure of the racing chassis and i will adopt and change everything that's needed, i've been working for an engineering company for 15 months as a professional welder, so that should be no problem, i built the 160 on my own and everything is perfect with it.

It sounds as if you should be able to do what you are wanting to do. I look forward to seeing how it turns out

thanks, i will start a thread in the projects when i have sold my GX and start getting the parts etc, and as for the suspension i have had a go on a kart of a friends's friend, its got a CRF 450 engine on, using just a racing kart chassis and no suspension, not too bad as long as it only get used on tarmac roads which mine will
