So I found this Manco 415-10 on Craigslist for 70 bucks.

Has B&S engine that runs but tons of rust in the tank, clogged carb, missing all of the brake components, front and rear rods, spring, and drum. Clutch looks old but I wont toss it until its tested.

Any advice on the following would be great.

I can simply replace the engine with the 6.5 cheapo engine on Harbor Freight tools site and be done with it, or try to clean the tank and carb of the engine I have, just the replacement tank is 90 bucks.

Also I cant find a good picture of how the brake rods, and spring are put together. Anyone have any advice on replacing that or fabircating a part that will work?

Thanks in advance

You can clean the tank. I would try to get this one rebuilt, more for a learning experience if you aren't going to use it. A predator would work fine on that kart.

What method would you suggest for cleaning the tank?

Also any tips on keeping the kart at a slower speed and not burning up a clutch?
I have a 3 and 6 year old that will be just "riding" for now but like to throttle the engine or reduce the gears to make it more friendly for them.

Im excited about the project.

Welcome to the forum! If you want to get the tank nice and rust free, put some nuts and bolts, small stones etc in the tank. Shake it around so that all the rust inside is broken free. You might have to do this for a while. Wash the tank out a few times with some gas.

OR, you can use the reverse electrolysis method of rust removal. I have used it a few times, and it is quite a fun thing to do (I did it on my BS tank). Nearly like a chemistry experiment. Your kids will probably like it too. Have a look at the links below on how it is done.

Electrolysis to remove rust

To slow down the kart for your kids, you are going to have to change your gear ratio (lower it). Using a throttle stop just wears out your clutch because your engine does not get up sufficient RPM's to engage the clutch fully, and it slips and wears.

Post the tooth count on your clutch, jackshaft (if you have) and axle sprockets. We can help you from there.

When you start doing any work on your kart, start a build log in the Projects section of the forum so that you can post your progress.
