So, today, I had an "apprenticeship." This was basically a trip to the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. We heard from a freshman advisor as well as 5 students, all in different disciplines of engineering. They told us of all of the programs and co-op opportunities for students. This reaffirmed my decision that I want to, without a doubt, become a mechanical engineer.

We had a student guided tour from an industrial engineering student. She took us to the many labs and interesting places; the RFID lab, the nano-tech lab, and, my personal favorite, the SAE Formula Car shop. We looked at last year's build on display, which was powered by a CBR 600RR tuned to peak performance 6240RPM.

We visited the handful of guys working on the car and they told us all about SAE and the car. I didn't get an opportunity to ask if they participate in the Mini Baja competition, but the car was amazing. This thing was beautiful, and it was only a bare steel, TIG welded frame. I was most amazed by the A-arms. They were 3/8" for the top arms and 1/2" for the bottoms. Every member of the team is a Mechanical Engineer and, in the program's 26 year history at Pitt, 100% of the SAE team members received a job out of college (many with large auto companies like Ford, BMW, Chevy). Some auto manufacturers (Ford, IIRC) will actually credit you one year of work with the company if you participate in SAE for 4 years in college.

I loved the visit and this was what decided my college major. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to go a pre-medical route to anesthesiology or mechanical engineering, but today's visit decided it for me. I have my sights set on becoming a mechanical engineer going into the automotive industry.

VERY NICE!

My day consisted of getting my drivers license replaced since i lost my old one, playin some black ops on the 360, and getting directions to a shop i am planning on applying at, they are a 4x4 fabrication shop, specializing in SEMA trucks and things like that, after dropping by to see the caliber of some people there, im pretty sure i can get in hehe. would save me some money on trying to purchase another building and trying to rebuild my reputation, i could just bring the machines and fab stuff down here :)

I walked into that kinda dimly lit, small shop, 2 guys on YouTube, one was preaching about eating bread crusts, and 4 more around a table of tools and parts. The entire frame with motor mounted was elevated on two stands. I almost died, I didn't want to leave. They had an old Miller TIG machine, a mill, a lathe, bandsaw, drill press, grinders, and sanders. That moment made up my mind, being able to participate in something like that in college then do it for a living.

My day consisted of me getting rather pissed off with both my mini bike and gokart, and snapping a chain.
LOL FML!!!

Then I sit down after making up backed school work, I find this. I was amazed to find one of these is such great shape. Now, only if I had more land and $2700 to spend. I was also surprised to read that this 350R has a Comet Duster Clutch too.

Well, I guess I'll just make a small update about my day today. It's been a good week!

So, today, I actually had to go to school as I've been out all week. But, I did get good news. A stop motion film we tossed together in 4 hours on Monday night placed 2nd in the competition, receiving 95 of 100 possible points, so we didn't miss 1st by much. Then I got to go snowboarding, although it rained a lot recently, so it was ice with the occasional dusting of blown powder or shaved ice. Not great, but being on the mountain is just enjoyable.

Here's the video. Marcellus shale drilling is a hot topic in our area and this was done as an entry for our "Green Initiative" program. The whole clip had to be under a minute and present the full issue. Yes, that's real fire. We doused it in rubbing alcohol and lit it!

You don't have the brains to be engineer? So you want to be a diesel apprentice? I have been doing my apprenticeship for a while now, and I can tell you that it isn't as easy as it seems! I wasn't the brightest kid in my class but was far from the lowest. I have been playing with diesels since the age of about 8-9 and thought I had a reasonable knowledge to begin with, and it still is challenging as all hell. Saying that, this is in NZ don't know what Australia is like.
