I've just finally bought my first kart after reading about them for many years, but I have been an enthusiast of all things mechanical since shortly after I learned to walk. I guess I sort of skipped right over the whole running thing and shot straight for driving... My true love has always been cars, so naturally, modifying them has been a passion of mine that started not long after my adoration for the cars themselves. This has lead to a couple of very interesting machines in my stable...
#1: My second car, and first real project, a 2006 Focus ZX4 ST. I bought the car about two weeks before my 18th birthday back in 2008, and things have really gotten a bit out of hand considering it is based on what most people in the U.S. refer to as a "throw-away" car...
Before pics, here is the modification list. Keep in mind, anything labeled as K|Bdev. is something that I fabricated or designed myself:
Wheels/Tires:
-16x7.5 et20 Borbet Type B
-205/40-16 Kumho Ecsta AST (extremely impressive so far, especially for the price!)
Suspension:
-H&R Coilovers
-H&R "Race" camber/caster plates
-FSWerks 60mm I.D. front spring conversion
-H&R 100mm x 60mm I.D. x 748lb/in front springs
-H&R 100mm x 60mm I.D. x 624lb/in rear springs
-Energy Suspension rear endlinks (rebuilt with stainless hardware)
-K|Bdev. adjustable front endlinks (currently disconnected to aid rotation)
-Prothane rear swaybar bushings
-Prothane inner/outer rear LCA bushings
-SPC camber arms
-K|Bdev. toe arms (heim-jointed, soon to be converted to bushing ends)
-Prothane front control arm bushings
-Deleted rear "cam-style" aligment bolts
Power/delivery:
-Modified Marcy Motorsports intake
-2.5" K|Bdev. T-304 stainless flex-back exhaust
-Energy dogbone inserts
-C-F-M balance shaft delete
-Steeda Tri-Ax short throw shifter
-Clutchmasters FX100 clutch
-Clutchmasters billet flywheel
Exterior:
-Customized headlights with silver bezels and "Frenched" (yellow) turn signal chambers
-Front lip from an Escalade
-Satin black rear bumper louvers
-Satin black fender stripes IN VINYL, NOT PLASTI-DIP.
-C-F-M billet shorty antenna
-Tinted taillights
-Customized clear markers
-Fenders rolled and pulled to within an inch of their lives
-Dings, dents, chips, and scratches everywhere
-Thule Aero roofrack with Side Arm bike attachment and snowboard clamp. (mod? Not sure...)
Interior:
-Pioneer factory-size coaxial speakers in each door
-MK1 center console re-colored black with aluminum-colored shifter surround.
-Redline Goods black leather shifter/e-brake boots with red stitching
-Black suede-covered cluster surround and door pull surrounds
And pictures:
This should give you an idea of just how tiny the springs are. They are 1/4" shorter than the helper springs that came out of my friend's Jetta coilovers.
2: My other car is a 1967 Volvo P220 Amazon station wagon. This car was purchased this past September and has pretty much sat ever since. This winter after I get a beater/daily driver purchased and the kart sorted out, I'll be working on getting this car running. I'll also be upgrading to Mikuni carbs and fabricating new suspension pieces to convert to car to QA1 coilovers on all four corners. After I enjoy it mostly stock and lowered for a couple of years, I will be swapping in a Tremec T-6060 and a 4.4 V8 from an XC90. I'm not looking for crazy power, but 400-450 at the wheels should be plenty of fun. I have yet to decide if I want to achieve that power through forced induction or an excessive amount of throttle bodies and several holes in the hood. I'm leaning toward the latter.
